Culture: Labor and Legality
Being inside a world that is not your own, a world that is so different from your beliefs and ideas. A world whose culture is different from yours. Where the work ethic, home life, and family connections all differ. Imagine a world in which people are judged based on the color of their skin without giving them a second look or listening to their story; listening to where they are from. This is a common trend in American society; a society where we commonly think is equal and about empowerment but that is just our ideal perspective not our reality. Reality a world where it is true to the way things are.

That is commitment. That is Principle.
The Lions faithfully bond with their families and the values they have provide example that. They will do anything for their families to be able to have stable economy, and a happy life. The lions risk it all to give what they can to those around them. Although Chuy sends money back to his family, it is also believed that when you get married you no longer need to send money and it transitions into a nuclear family, in which means lions like Chuy will no longer be expected to help support his family in Mexico but the family he created for himself instead.
“...To which these workers’ live have become truly and probably permanently transnational: the workers in Mexico mostly say they want to come back to the United States, and the workers in the United States mostly want to return to Mexico. Close relationships with friends and families in both Mexico and the United States mean that the lions will forever emotionally reside in both places.” (Gomberg-Muñoz, pg62)
The emotional toll the Lions took to be able to support their values is a huge one, the life they live in is one in which they will never be able to find just one home happily. The lions will always have a stress of having a life in Chicago, IL but living in Mexico. For most of the Lions their families are in Mexico their brothers, their sisters, their parents. To which they have a strong bond with them. Unlike American societies leaving
Lions live in groups called prides, the average adult male weighs around 400 to 500 pounds and the females 200 to 300 pounds. Irony is that in the prides the females do the majority of the hunting and provide for the group, while the males stay in their territory and provide protection and security. Lions are the only social cats, which means they look after each other unlike tigers, cheetahs etcetera which primarily live and hunt alone. Lions are mostly carnivorous animals. However like all living things, they need water but between them and a source of fresh water stands a herd of two ton wild beasts, the
While the true meaning of the lion is never specified one can use the experiences and events that the narrator describes and reasonably believe that the lion is a representation and symbol of growing up and the process of puberty. As the story progresses the narrator describes different events of his childhood when the process of growing up is evident. Such as the time when the narrator and his friend discovered a perfectly round stone ball, which they later would learn is a grinding ball. However, for the time being they saw this ball as near perfection and were in awe of the sheer flawlessness of this stone ball. This event shows the childish innocence that they had in the belief that the ball was naturally perfect. The problem they faced was the fact that they felt that they could not tell anyone about their discovery because it too might be taken away. So they hide the ball down by the river. It was their little secret, a secret that fascinated them but also confused them at the same time. A secret that they did not understand but could not get away from. It was much like their secret lion. Although the time of which they learned of its true meaning is not specified this fact that they did learn of its true purpose is evidence that supports their childish innocence could not last much against the current of the ever changing
Family. A word that has about as many meanings as there are stars in the sky. Can family truly be defined, or is it merely interpretive? According to Seccombe, family is a relationship by blood, marriage, or affection, in which members may cooperate economically, may care for children, and may consider their identity to be intimately connected to the larger group (Seccombe 4). Although I do agree with the above explanation of family, I believe that it is inadequate in that it only supplies a framework of family rather than the duties and purpose. To me, family is a unit of individuals, related or not, that symbolize and exude comfort, solace, and support through all the trials and triumphs life throws our way.
Did you know that the number of lions has dropped by over 300,000 over the past 50 years, or that the lions in Africa are losing their habitat? In the Scope Magazine article, Attack of the Man-Eaters, by Lauren Tarshis— Colonel J. H. Patterson was a British engineer who was building a railroad in Africa in the late 1800’s. He had no idea what sort of terrors he would face during his journey. In the other Scope article, Meet the Lion Whisperer by Susan Orlean, a man named Kevin Richardson shares his amazing story of the bonds he has with his lion friends. Throughout both articles, they have many similarities and differences.
Lion will always try to go the extra mile to get his way, no matter what it takes. An example of this is shown on page 34 of the book; “Once when one of the guys who cleans the tables in the cafeteria told him he couldn’t be taking food off the premises, Lion told him it was okay, that he had been one of the three athletes in the nation who’d been awarded athletic scholarships to high school, and that there was an ‘all you can eat’ clause in
Although the new pen does create a slightly better environment for the lions than the horse trailer, it does not equate to the environment that the lions could be living in in the wild. The lions go on to live in the pen for some time, but tragedy soon comes about. After a steady rain storm, a faulty electrical system in close proximity to the pen sends a strong current throughout the ground within it. Terry notices that his male lion, Lambert, is not acting normal, jumping around and carrying on. Terry does not realize that Lambert is being electrocuted. Lambert soon dies from the electric shocks in the pen. Terry, although very upset with himself, continues to keep his female lion and her cubs in the pen. Several months later, Terry eventually realizes that the pen is not the best place for the lions and has them transported to a wildlife sanctuary. But it is too late. An innocent lion had already died due to Terry’s unreasonable living environment for his exotic “pets”. Lions are not meant to be kept as pets, and Terry doing so causes destruction of nature, in his case keeping lions from their natural habitat, eventually turning lethal to one. All of this could have been avoided if Terry didn’t go to extreme, and sometimes unreasonable, means out of love for his
For over centuries, the term family has been specifically used to mean a group of people that consist of two parents and their children. The word is originally from the Latin word Familia, which means household or family. Although this word is known all over the world, it can have a different context to each person. In the United States alone, family can be referred to two adults and their children, a single-parent household, extended relatives, and a structure of more than two parents. Despite how the family structure may look like within a household, it plays a major role in life, either directly or indirectly.
What’s the meaning of family? According to Merriam-Webster dictionary family is defined as “all the descendants of common ancestor”, but is that how do you define family? Have you ever had someone in your life outside of your family that you were able to confide in? Share your happiness and saddest moments with? Be your biggest advocate? If the answer is yes, then these people are considered family as well. Channeling personal experiences I’m able to relate to Cecile Gilmer’s believe that “Families are not only blood relatives but sometimes just people who show up and love you when no one else will.”
A family consists of a group of interacting individuals related by blood, marriage, cohabitation, or adoption who interdependently perform relevant functions by fulfilling expected roles. (Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014, p. 150)
The clouds turned eerie and dark, as lightning struck beautifully, and the thunder roared loudly in the sky, welcoming the new king of the Lionheart Kingdom, King Leo XVI. Leo was a fortunate and young cub born in the wealthy side of the kingdom. He was chosen to be the king because his grandfather, Leo XIV had died. Leo was still a young cub, and he still had so much to discover about the world around him. He was not the typical lion who was brave, courageous, and audacious; he was more of a lazy, indolent, and an indecisive lion. As soon as he became king he moved into a paradisal and heavenly palace called Leon, where everything is what any poor animal could ever dreamed of. And what is a king without a queen? Leo decided
What is a family? It can be properly described as a group of people consisting of parents and children living together. Although, families are more than just parents and children living together. They are the people that love each other and sacrifice for each other, no matter what. In the novel, Grapes of Wrath written by John Steinbeck describes the Joad family living in through the Great Depression. This family travels together across the U.S. in order to find new jobs in a country where there are limited ones left. Throughout this story, the Joad family continues to model key roles that the standard family needs to follow to stay together. Steinbeck describes the roles of family as taking in and caring for people that are not family
They see the killing of the lion as immoral and wrong and suggest the relocation of mountain lions to save them from being show; however, the department of fish and game which uses science and knowledge of cougar behavioral patterns have determined simply relocating the mountain lions will not be successful in saving both the mountain lion and the sheep. Mountain lions have large territories, so moving one would potentially place it into another lion’s territory, causing them to become aggressive towards each other, ultimately ending in one killing the other. Also, even if a cougar is brought one hundred miles away from the sheep, it would be fully capable of relocating its former territory, thus allowing it to hunt the sheep again (Meadows, 1999). In order to prevent the two lions from fighting and potentially injuring each other or killing each other, so two lions die, and to ensure that the bighorn sheep are safe from predation, a single lion must be culled. It is the best alternative that will lead to the greatest chances of survival for the bighorn sheep
The big Idea or theme in the story, “The Wild Life of Christian the Lion” by Tod Olson and the poem “ Wild Home” by Rebecca Kai Dotlich is, can a something that lived in captured forever ever learn to be free in the wild? My evidence from the text is “ In the wild , lions prowl thousands of acres of the land. Surly London was not a place for a lion to be.” Another thing from the the text that supports the main idea is when John said, “ We knew we couldn’t betray him by putting him in a zoo.” Another thing in the text of Christian the lion was, “ The plan was to release Christian into the wild. But it was not as simple as it seemed it would be because, animals raised in captivity do not have the skills to survive the wild.” In the poem “ Wild
Many anmals have different ways on survivng on this planet. Lions are animals that are feared. When a lion is hungry they don't just got to a McDonalds and order a burger. They hunt for food. They're tactical and quick. For example, a gazele is walking around minding its own business. But, what it doesn't know that a lion is stalking it waiting for the right time to leap out and attack. A lion can hunt at anytime of the day because they have night vision where it can see both during the day and during the night. A lion must find its mate to reprouce. When they do reproduce they have cubs, and they take care of their cubs until its old enough to hunt and live its own life. Even though a lion is feared it still has to survive because other animals,
According to Swartz and Scott (2009), family is defined as a group of people related to each other by blood, marriage, adoption or being sexually open in a relationship. The
