In 2006, Memphis had the second highest violent crime rate in the country. The mayor of Shelby county at the time collaborated with the District Attorney, the Sheriff’s dept, Memphis Police Director and business leaders to try to address the issue (Goggans, 2014). Collectively they created a 15 point research based crime reduction plan. Due to Memphis’ data driven policing initiative, their safe community strategy has helped with the decline in serious crime in Memphis by more than 26.6 percent. In January of 2011, Memphis saw its lowest murder rate in 30 years. Nevertheless, despite the success, violence among their youth is still on the rise (Goggans, 2014).
On April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho, a 23-year-old college student, shocked the nation when he perpetrated the deadliest shooting massacre in U.S. history. The violent rampage took place on the Virginia Tech University campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, where Cho was a senior majoring in English. Before turning the gun on himself and delivering a fatal gunshot to the head, Cho murdered more than 30 of his classmates and University faculty; numerous others were injured. In a strange twist, several days after the tragedy, a package determined to have been mailed by Cho during the shooting spree was received at NBC News in New York. The package contained photos of Cho posing with guns, as well as video clips and various pages of Cho’s writing.
In 2009, the Hate Crimes Statistics Act was amended by the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This amendment provides funding to help different levels of jurisdiction better investigate and prosecute hate crimes. Additionally, this amendment expanded the protections of hate crimes to include disability, gender identity, sexuality, and gender. This Act was brought about following the deaths of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr., who were both victims of brutal hate crimes.
The City of Detroit has been a renowned city for culture, automobiles and many technological influences throughout the world. But, during the early 1900’s, the City of Detroit was plagued by gang wars just like multiple cities throughout the United States. Unfortunately, the start of Gang Violence has been a mystery ever since it started to effect the public. And feuds, like the “Gianolla – Vitale” feud happened during the Prohibition Era. The gangs were controlling the whole city. There we dozens of crooked cops, judges were crooked, and pretty much every official in the city was crooked. But why did all of these terrible things happen in the City of Detroit?
What does it mean to be all good or bad? Does it mean you can be born evil and cannot change no matter what? Or that someone can be all good and is unable of any malice? This idea is foolish, since everybody has a little bit of kindness and malice in their heart. The majority of people categorize someone as good or bad based on what actions they make. One great example of this statement is King John. Many remember him from The Tales of Robin Hood; A malign monarch that only cares for his selfish needs. Others remember him as a historical figure, who signed an important document, which is The Magna Carta Libertatum. In history, it shows that he, indeed, was a brutal ruler in the early 1200s. Yet, people misunderstand John Lackland as someone truly evil. In reality, King John was not great king, but he certainly wasn’t
We have to pay especial attention to the agreement reached with the former Co-owner of the company, Mr. Verden. With the many conversations about the African-American communities and their issues with gang violence, government assistance, and the lack of jobs in their communities it is clear to say that the American Dream or even a moderate lifestyle was not created for all African Americans and Minorities and since we found a way to be noticed, heard, and felt like they’re rightfully a part of something America wants to now label it “war or Drugs” and “gang Violence” thus creating Gang Injunctions in those predominantly of color communities. Now I am not stating that the violence is not present, innocent lives are not being taken, nor are drugs consuming our communities, but what I am saying is that they act as if there is no other approach that could help clean up the streets, provide piece and harmony among all communities, and solve issues for the betterment of the community. Instead they are removing them from their communities, threatening them from going to their neighborhood, and as a consequence they get jail time, an institution that already houses half if not more than half of our black men. The gang injunction initiative is set up to tear apart the minority communities through driving up the prices and making them move, especially if they have a family member who is under the injunction’s rules. Its ironic how they put them in such enclosed space, while they make suburban home for the economically fit causing them to commute and now they are systematically removing them
The idea of violence is instilled in everyone’s head in some way or another. From the time we are born we are equipped with the idea that we must react when we are upset. When someone affects us in a negative way, there is an idea in our minds that urges us to fight back or cause harm to that person. This idea of causing harm stays with us from childhood until we take our last breath. Since 2013, there have been 242 school shootings within America. Even worse, there have been over a thousand mass shootings in the country resulting in mass casualties. Most recently, one single man murdered fifty-eight people at a concert in Las Vegas, Nevada and injured over 240 others. Although the motive may have been different between these shootings, one thing remains the same for all of them, the act of violence.
Beginning with the urban drug wars and the Rodney King riot all the way up the spectacular lynchings in Texas and Wyoming, and now the mass murder/terrorist strike by teenagers in their own high school, the 90s is a decade made numb by civil disorder.
