Whether it be someone from another country, with different ideals, or with a mental or physical disability, if someone is different than the norm, they are outcasted from this self-centered society. The year is 2018. Society now consists of teens and young adults absorbed in themselves, whether it be through pictures, social media, or just their mentality and how they view the world. The average person today would be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder twenty years ago. This becomes a problem when individuals become so interested in themselves that they can’t be bothered to deal with those who are different. People have become so absorbed in themselves, whether it be through social media, pictures, or just in casual conversation. When holding a conversation with a 20 year old, they will talk about themselves far more than when holding a conversation with a 50 year old. This generational change has caused us to care less about other people, especially those who are different than the typical person. “The journey from immaturity to maturity is a sort of movement from narcissism to connection.”(Remes 3). If we begin to connect with each other we can learn more about those with disabilities, and how our previous misconceptions of them are skewed. An example of this is shown in David Sedaris’ Naked, when his teacher talks about having kids: “‘I’ll have a boy and then maybe later I’ll have a girl, because when you do it the other way round, there’s a good chance the boy will turn out to be funny’... ‘When I say funny I mean funny as in…’ She relaxed her wrist allowing her hand to dangle and flop.” (Sedaris 82). In this passage she is referring to the boy being gay, which would be a terrible burden in her eyes. This demonstrates how modern parents think mostly of themselves when bearing children, think about how difficult it would be to raise them if they are different. The way Sedaris talks about homosexuals in this chapter also shows the prejudices that have been instilled in him since he was a child. Being a homosexual would be the worst thing in his eyes, it would bring dishonor to his family, and he would be outcasted because he is different. This attitude attests to the fact that when presented with something or someone out of the ordinary, most people think about themselves, and how difficult it would make their
