For my paper I have chosen to analyze current CEO of Hewlett Packard (HP) Company. It is especially interesting to me personally to track the success of the person who is no stranger to the financial world and appeared at “The Wall Street Journal”, “Time”, “Fortune”,
“Business Week” and to research the traits of leadership style of a huge technological company, along with mechanisms of implementation of such a leadership approach and manners in which the entire company shifted. I’m talking about Margaret Cushing, also known as “Meg Whitman” who currently holds CEO position of HP, an idol of a businesswoman. She was born in 1956 in Long Island, NY. Graduated with MBA diploma from Harvard School of Business. From that she became one of the planet’s most successful CEO and powerful leader. Prior to HP Meg held CEO and leading management positions in many large companies as follow: Hasbro Inc. Preschool Division as a General Manager, Florist Transworld Delivery as
President & CEO, Stride Rite Corporation as
President of Stride Rite Division, Walt Disney Company as Senior VP in Marketing, Bain & Company as VP, Procter & Gamble as VP Brand Management, and CEO of eBay. Meg Whitman stared her home run beginning 80’s, at that time she worked as an executive of a strategic planning department over at Disney Company. She then moved on and in 90’s she took a position of CEO at DreamWorks, Procter & Gamble, and Hasbro. As graduate of Harvard Scool of Business and Princeton
There is a great importance put on business leadership, this is directly due to how a business not only functions but in how fruitful the company can become. A great leader essentially can take a business plan that is weak yet turn it into a success, whereas a poor leader stands a higher chance of ruining the best of business plans. That is why it is essential to develop effective leadership throughout a companies entire management program at all levels. How does one develop or retain strong leadership? Companies must be focused on hiring strategies that encompass very specific parameters, building from within whilst creating a strong foundation for employee development and succession planning. Leadership is essential in any organization. The style and theory embraced determines whether the company will or will not achieve their goals. in all cases theory must be embraced, as a companies theory, style, and strategy is greatly dependent on the industry the company is in (Sadler, 2014). “The behavioral theory is one of the widely used theories of management. It suggests that leaders are made and not born. It gives room for training to install leadership traits in leaders at the expense of denying them a chance. There are various leadership styles embraced by companies (Cyert, & March, 2005).” This paper takes a look at the management styles of two specific
The problem is that, while the market has changed beyond recognition, leadership has not. Many companies still use leadership styles and practices better suited to the boom years. For example, we found that nearly half the leaders in financial companies rely on a "directive or coercive" leadership style, compared to just one-third of leaders across all sectors.
Frank Blake, CEO of Home Depot, has a participative leadership style that increasingly wins support from business leaders (“Home Depot tries”, 2007). Blake is known for great motivators with reward policies and thank you notes which made him good at both task orientation and people orientation in his management style. Robert Niblock, CEO of Lowe’s, has a balance of task orientation and people orientation with more employee participation and engagement.
Great leaders have shaped the World we live in today and they are remembered for what they were able to accomplish during their lifetime. The history books are filled with leaders that changed the very nature of something by taking a different road or challenging the way everyone perceived things. Leaders would not be able to accomplish these daring feats without the help of their followers, the individuals in the background giving them their support (Schermerhorn & Uhl-Bien, 2014). Colleen Barrett was able to break through the glass ceiling and led Southwest Airlines (SWA) to become one of the most successful airlines in the industries (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). In the following pages will explore Colleen Barrett’s leadership
The aspects of Traits theory that are relevant to Carly Fiorina can be summarized as two styles that were exhibited by her at HP: “Achievement Oriented”and “Ambition.” Fiorina’s past achievements in business and her well known reputation for being ambitious were among the reasons she was hired by the Board in their desire to turn the company around. For example, she faced greater challenges than most CEOs in having to guide HP through a merger of computer maker Compaq, the acquisition culminating in 2002. It is identified that she was over ambitious in her leadership. A Leader wanting to grow the company is to be admired, but sometimes a company’s culture and resources place practical limits on growth, especially in the short term. Fiorina was caught in the middle; she could not grow revenues and profits quickly enough to meet the Board’s expectations.
The chapters two and five discuss two successful figures in business that I can learn from with their different leadership styles. Michael Dell and Andy Grove led their companies to billionaire status with great business strategies and some risks during their tenure. Michael Dell focus on the customer and Andy Grove focus on the employees always being on their toes so that they will always work hard. Their companies both struggle at times, but they put strategies in place to continue their successful. I will provide a brief description of Michael Dell and Andy Grove contributions, their resistance they encountered, and how they are different along with the factor of their success.
If one of these CEO’s makes a mistake or decides to be corrupt they have the capability of affecting things all over the planet. That is why the movie “The Wolf of Wall Street” is so interesting. This film shows multiple examples of a CEO making choices to be corrupt, which has the capability of affecting a lot of people. This essay is going to explain how an American company can have a large effect on the world through using example from “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
From Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela’s charisma, to Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King’s intelligence and Steve Jobs’ analytical nature, there can be as numerous ways to lead as there are leaders (Crossman, 2010). Leadership is a hot debate both in the business world and other areas of the society. Throughout the world's, there have been as many leadership models as there have been their commentators (Burns & Peltason, 1966). Fortunately, psychologists and businesspersons have established useful frameworks that refer to the main ways of leadership.

Angela Ahrendts is one of the most successful women in business of our generation. This is due largely in part to her exceptionally strong leadership skills. Ahrendts’ resume of accomplishments can stack up with the best in the world and includes honors and awards such as, The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her services to British business in 2013, The Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Group from 2010-present, Oracle World Retail Awards: Outstanding Leadership 2010, ranked #4 on Fortune’s 2013 top people in business, and ranked inside Forbes’ top 100 Most Powerful Women in business for the past nine consecutive years (Alexander, 2013). Every company that Angela has held a leadership role in has experienced great success. However, despite her many successes and achievements Ahrendts is describe as motivating and humble by her counterparts. This speaks volumes of not only her vast amount of business knowledge, but also to her ability to lead people in an effective, relationship-building manner. After much research on Ahrendts and her work at each company we conclude that she is predominantly a Theory Y leader and supports that with four key styles and traits. Among those are a balance of task-oriented leadership and relationship-oriented leadership, in addition to strong administrative skills and interpersonal skill. Ahrendts uses a combination of all of these styles and skills to effectively lead her subordinates and drive successful
I want to live the American Dream. I have the wife, but I also want the two children with the house that has a white picket fence. To do so, I have to work. Since entering the workforce at 16, I’ve held many jobs working in food and beverage, fast food, and investment industries. Working in these industries has provided me with opportunities to work with different managers. All of the managers I’ve worked with had different personalities and management. The purpose of this paper is to identify the management styles I encountered, the type of bosses they were, and the leadership styles they demonstrated.
Given the effect a CEO can have on a company's success, we can understand why their compensation packages

This leadership style can be reflected from her first moves after joining HP. Firstly, she required the marketing department to launch a re-branding advertising campaign in 6 weeks, which, considered the size and the circumstances, was quite a high requirement. Secondly, she set a growth target of 20% to be met in 2002 and started to initiate rapid organizational changes. The changes included consolidating power, as well as attempting to clearly define the roles
