The purpose of this project was to determine people’s general knowledge of current events. High school students seemed like an interesting population to survey, with the goal of determining if political issues were important to them and how much they kept up with current events. Simply asking questions would have been too subjective, and thus an evaluation, done through a survey, of their knowledge would serve as a better indication of how important current events are to the average high school student. Other surveys regarding current events knowledge have been conducted, however that information may not be relevant to this particular experiment, given that the data sought for this study was the knowledge of current events among high schoolers …show more content…
After performing the test, a chi square value of 126.58 was determined. With a degrees of freedom value of 4, this constituted a p value of 2.101644 x 10-26. With an alpha level of .01, the null hypothesis was rejected. The study sought to determine the nature of current events knowledge for teenagers and prove that knowledge level was limited. Samples were taken from four high schools, but analyzed as one set of data. Through a chi squared statistical test, it was determined that knowledge level varied at a statistically significant level between questions. If knowledge level was independent of question, this outcome would have been highly unlikely. The number of students who said they did not know the answer of a question was in fact dependent upon the question asked. This suggests that teenage knowledge levels on current events issues may not be uniform, but related to the type of question or topic area. However, the questions themselves may have been somewhat poorly constructed and as such could have led respondents to select a certain answer choice, which limits applicability of the study. In addition, sampling methods and sample sizes varied between high schools, which means there may have been some underrepresentation and overrepresentation of certain groups. As such, while the study certainly could warrant further analysis of the issue, specific findings in this case may not be useful. Misleading questions and varied methodologies inhibit the work’s
With a P-value of 0.00, we have a strong level of significance. No additional information is needed to ensure that the data given is accurate.
For example, Abramowitz uses the Converse study to show that education was a strong predictor of ideological sophistication. This is important to note, because as Abramowitz mentions on page 35, from 1956-2004 the percentage of respondents that took place in the ANES survey with only a grade school education went from 37% all the way down to 3%. Furthermore, participants with at least some college experience went from 19% to 61%. Using this information, Abramowitz directly refutes Fiorina’s claim that little has changed in the American public since the 1950’s. Fiorina believes that even 21st Century Americans are still not very well informed about politics, along with not holding views very strongly and are not ideological. This is at odds with Abramowitz’s view. Abramowitz concedes that among the politically disengaged, Fiorina’s argument does make some sense, however, when referring to the politically engaged his argument does not hold up. It is important to remember too, as Abramowitz points out, the politically engaged is not just some small fringe group, they are actually a substantial group of the American
For example, the First female prime minister of Canada. At the age of eighteen, individuals gain the right to vote; does this mean they are expected to know the extensive history of Canadian politics? If no, are they considered an uneducated voter or a bad voter? This raises a reliability concern. The intention behind the survey is if someone can name a political leader, they likely have a better comprehensive knowledge of politics. This is an area that requires further testing. Is there a correlation between knowing candidates’ names and extensive political understanding? Just because someone cannot name previous leaders, does not mean they do not have an understanding of how Canadian politics ought to
Most Teenagers my age have a very small grasp on our country's politics and what's actually going on in the country and all around the world. Some of them don't even care because they say it doesn't matter or it won't affect them. But they are wrong because what happens in our country's government will affect every single person's future in some way. So it is much better to keep informed about what's going on so you could decide what you agree and disagree on with some background information on the topics. They could get some of this information from watching the news but mos tteenagers do not. Since some students don't take a political or current events class they lack the knowledge on the differences between our countries to main political
As politics and government becomes more complex and involved, more effort is required to keep up with and understand it. As a result, many Americans have lost touch with current events and happenings. Therefore, when election time rolls around, many people lack enough information to develop an educated opinion and support a candidate with their vote, so they just do not vote at all. This lack of information is also related to the belief that one vote will not matter. People believe that their vote will not count, and are therefore following the news less and becoming out of touch with public affairs and politics (Is the System Broken?”). This lack of information is also more strongly apparent among the younger voting population. When interviewed
Most people are exposed to the same principals and agents of political socialization. Families spread values that support political authorities and can heavily contribute to children's initial political ideological views, or party preferences. Families influence political knowledge and identification depending on variables such as family demographics, life cycle, parenting style, parental level of political skepticism and frequency of political discussions. Demographics such as gender and age also attribute to political socialization. School is another agent of political socialization. Spending numerous years in school, children in the United States are taught and reinforced a view of the world that their text books tell them to trust. Through primary, secondary and high schools, students are taught key principles such as individual rights and property, personal responsibility and duty to their nation. Another is mass media. Mass media is not only a source of political information; it is an influence on political values and beliefs. Various media outlets, through news coverage and late-night programs, provide different partisan policy stances that are associated with political participation. Religions, beliefs, and practices play a role in political opinion formation and political participation. The perspective offered by religious institutions shape judgement regarding public policy, and political decision

The results from this study only reflect a very small number of the population, so it is difficult for this experiment to show any significant results. It would have reflected better on the results if the sample size had been meet, however it was not possible due to lack of time and number of eligible volunteers.
Race and gender have been a very recurrent topic of discussion in the news nowadays. I have chosen a very recent news event for my current event analysis paper. The Event that I have chosen is centered around gender and racial discrimination. This incident happened recently when a Black doctor - Dr. Tamica Cross faced discrimination due to her gender and race on Delta airlines flight in mid-air . The Reading that I have used to connect to the news event are — “10 Ways racism killed Michael Brown and Eric Garner”by Chauncey Devega, Chapel hill shooting and western media bigotry, “More Black Men are in prison today than Enslaved in 1850”by Dick Price, “Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence against Women of Color”by Kimberle Crenshaw, “The Social Construction of Race’’by Ian F. Haney Lopez. I chose this news event because I was shocked seeing the discrimination faced by someone of a very high reputed profession because of the color of their skin and the gender. The main idea behind my current event analysis paper is that how gender and race discrimination overpowers and discriminates anybody regardless of the profession. The discrimination due to Race and gender should be taken more seriously and their should be qual respect for every Race, Gender as this is the basic to mankind. This paper heads that event that make us realize how gender and race plays an important role in our lives and it goes with us everywhere we go and when it is
Why do Americans have limited amount of political knowledge? It’s because the public lacks interest in politics. They rely on group/party loyalty, rather than reasoning. Their responses change randomly from survey to survey. Recent research shows that the public knows some basic things. For example, they know the location of the capital and the length of president’s term, but they lack knowledge about other basic things. About 50% know there are 2 senators for each state, and only 66% know which party controls the House. They show high instability of their preferences, so explosion of information sources has not helped. The authors Greenburg and Page believe that political “trivia” may not be a good measure of adequate knowledge. They also mentioned that the reason for the instability of preference is because people change their minds and reflect on multidimensional ideology. It’s understandable that American citizens have lost trust in the government as well as interest, but the group of people that show the least amount of interest in politics and voting are the young generation.
Wednesday, January 6, 2016, North Korea made an announcement that their hydrogen bomb testing was successful, resulting in “raised cries of indignation from the international community”. In the past the U.N had implemented sanctions against North Korea for continuing their development in nuclear weapons in 2006, 2009, 2013. Yet despite this, on Monday March 14, 2016, DPRK Today reported that a fifth test would be run and a new test involving ballistic missiles would also be included. Mr. Jongun had explained that the reason his country is now involving ballistic missiles is “. . . [so that] the warheads [are able] to survive heat and turbulence
“Knowledge is Power,” a succinct, yet accurate characterization that seems to transcend both time and innovation. Though, our ability to perceive and measure knowledge, particularly political knowledge, may not be as robust. Visual media, logically categorized as any form of media driven or supported by picture or video, has developed rapidly in relation to human development. The verbal or written word has been, and continues to be, the primary medium for exchanging information. Consequently, academia places a large emphasis on verbal/written communication. This propensity to limit academic interaction to verbal/written exchanges could skew measures of political knowledge, particularly in poor and marginalized clusters of the population (Prior,
One idea that Wattenberg suggests that I disagree with is that young people do not receive enough information to be politically informed. Information concerning politics has never been more available in society then it is today.
