Technology has consumed our generation of children and adults alike, such luxuries such as cell phones and internet, have made our ways of communication much more convenient and accessible. Whether it be for pleasure, intimidation, or education our children are interracting more and more via the internet and social media accounts. This new media has created two new problems for students and teachers to deal with, cyber bullying and sexting. The biggest consequence is how to punish them. As people ourselves its argued how to decide what punishment is necessary, and whom exactly is capable enough of doing so. Yalda Uhls and Mathias H. Heck Jr take a more defined look at these issues and how we may or may not be able to reduce the impact it has on generation and future generations as well. sexting 1 Sexting is classifyed by the U.S court systems as the exchange of sexually explicit text messages, including photographs, via cell phone.2d Cir. 2010. According to Dosomething.org eight states have enacted bills to protect minors from sexting, and an additional 13 states have proposed bills to legislation According to Mathian Heck Jr. one in five teens say they have sent or posted online nude photos of themselves. and twenty-two percent of girl youth reported doing this of which half were ages 13-16. Bullying by electric forms of contact, better known as cyberbullying, has become an epidemic throughout the world in the last few years. While those affected may not be harmed physically, mentally and emotionally they are tortured and some never recover. For youths who have been cyberbullied, it is reported that they have a higher chance of anxiety and also depression. They are also more likely to have problems in their personal lives and in school. Those affected can have thoughts that lead them to suicide and those thoughts sometimes follow them into adulthood. Also, victims of cyberbullying may take desperate measures and react violently towards others. With the rise of internet usage, social medias and cell-phones, bullying has
School has finally begun and the vacation is out of the way. But how about the bullies and the concerned victims? Unlike current pupils in today 's society, bullied/cyberbullied victims will never receive a break. As kids we’d say 'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt Me. ' But in today 's society? It could possibly too hard to cope with these words, specifically bullied victims.
Society is now immersed in the era of the digital age. Gone are the days of searching for hours in the library for the answers to a particular question, writing letters that can take days if not weeks to reach its recipient or simply visiting friends to reconnect. The Internet has provided a way to obtain and share a vast amount of information instantaneously on devices such as laptops and mobile phones. As a result, the number of users is increasing at an exponential rate as more people go online and embrace the convenience of the world-wide web. Social media sites allow the user to share personal information, photographs and videos at their own discretion as well as view the information shared by others, such sites have become an integrated part of everyday life especially amongst adolescents. Although, this modern way of social interaction and information sharing has its advantages it can likewise have a negative impact on the lives of some individuals. This essay will suggest that while the Internet has advanced communication and is growing in popularity, the issue of bullying has similarly evolved. Consequently, cyberbullying is now a recognised problem faced in most societies and educational institutions. To deal with this new phenomenon, countries such as New Zealand is proposing changes to existing laws and legislations.
Sexting that involves minors sending an explicit photograph of themselves to their peers has led to a legal gray area because there aren’t really laws around sexting in the United States. Some teenagers who have texted photographs of themselves, of their friends or partners have been charged with distribution of child pornography, while those who have received the images have been charged with possession of child pornography (Teen Sexting Laws). In some cases, the possession charge has been applied to schools officials who have investigated sexting incidents as well. Criminal Defense Lawyers point out the “Existing laws that deal with child porn which come with stiff penalties that include 20 years in prison for creating the material, seven years for sending it out, and four years for possession also Child sexually abusive material also brings with it the fact that once convicted you have to register as a sex offender” both kids who send the photos and kids who receive the photos can be charged. Those who send the photos may be charged with distributing child pornography in some states and those who receive the photos may be charged with receiving child pornography (Teen Sexting Laws) that is not something anyone want to have on their record because that lives with you forever. Aside from possible jail time and probation if convicted of charges related to child pornography, teens that
Often, Individuals sext to a partner or friends for their viewing only or in a unclear judgment, they might let someone take pictures of them that they might not otherwise agree to. Sexting under the age of eighteen, by the means of sending sexually explicit pictures is classified as child pornography. This is a contemporary issue as it is occurring now, and will continue to occur.
“Later this month, a North Carolina high school student will appear in a state court and face five child pornography-related charges for engaging in consensual sexting with his girlfriend” (Farivar). While, “Some people may see sexting as an expression of their sexuality…it raises issues of consent, privacy, harassment, and legality” (Sexting). “Sexting is a term created from the combination of the words sex and texting. It refers to the practice of electronically sending sexually explicit images or messages from one person to another. Basically, in layman's terms, if you send and/or receive a nude or semi-nude picture, you are sexting. There are serious consequences that come with this practice” (Rossman). The present-day punishments of underage
Amanda was in 7th grade when her cyberbullying story began. One day she met a guy online who talked her into flashing him her breasts, a decision she regretted later. A year later, she got a message on Facebook from him that said “if you don’t put on a show for me, I will send your boobs” to everyone she knew. One day, her picture was revealed to everyone. Shortly after, she suffered from depression, anxiety and panic disorder. She also started abusing drugs and alcohol. She moved to another city, but the bullying continued, especially since the guy had made a Facebook page with her boobs as his profile picture for her new school friends to see. After that, she lost all of her
Bullying is everywhere and it is getting worse, people are killing themselves from getting bullied on the internet. This essay is going to be how people deal with bullying and how people tell others about it and how the cyberbullying is going to be dealt with by the us and how they are going to make it a law for the people that bully.
For our research report I focused on cyber bullying and its effects on middle schoolers. While bullying has been around for many generations, new technology has created new types of bullying that has negative effects on middle schoolers mental health and behavior. Cyber bullying has many forms and is defined as using the internet, text messages, apps, and social networking sites to inflict harm on another. Many argue this form of bullying is worse than traditional bullying and is more stressful. Bullying is now not only occurring in school or on the playground but is coming home with students and following them throughout the day. Cyber bullying is hard to avoid and many times children may not know who their bully is. Cyber bullying has been
Bullying is like a disease, it stays within the schools, and community and people are trying to stop it. It destroys the victims that get bullied. Bullying has always been around and there are people trying to prevent it from happening. Bullying is being prevented by clubs and by people taking action. Bullying damages the victims and the computers can cause
Cyber-bullying has been an ongoing issue for a very long time; overtime it seems as if over the last few years it has progressed even more due to the development and increase of technology. I believe that cyber-bullying has become one of the most difficult issues to resolve in our society. Cyberbullying can be such a difficult thing to face in a world like today. The victim is usually bullied by an individual or a group of individuals who use this as a way to cope and make themselves feel better. The scariest part about cyber-bullying is that parents are not on top of this and are not aware of what their children are going through, usually until it is far too late. As a previous victim of being cyber bullied, I can 100% agree that if you allow these bullies they will lead you to believe many things that aren’t true about you. Most bullies envy you and will do their all in developing a negative identity for you. Many young immature adolescents are the targets of cyber bullying via different social networks such as , Facebook, twitter, Instagram and etc. Often, young adolescents are not able to understand that what they are going through is a form of bullying and they hold it all in until one day they explode. Being in this position at one point in my life makes me want to do everything possible to prevent another adolescent from feeling the pain, loneliness, and anxiety I once felt. Being in this position makes you feel like you have no self worth and that you are the only
Two years ago the word sexting did not exist. The combination of the words “sex” and “text” is now a term that is heavily discussed and causes issues for parents, students, educators, and law enforcement. Although there is no legal definition of sexting, it generally refers to writing sexually explicit messages, taking sexually explicit photos of themselves or others in their peer group and technologically transmitting those photos and/or messages to their peers. Now many people don’t know the problems associated with sexting. Most of these problems occur when one or all parties are minors. When a minor is involved there can be serious consequences that can follow a person for a life time.
Cyber bullying is a topic that has been researched many times. As technology changes, it is important that research is kept up to date on how victimization can affect present and future psychosocial adjustment issues. Cyber bullying is defined as victimization that intends to harm another through electronic means, where individuals can harm without physical interaction. (Tokunaga, 2010). Cyber bullying requires little planning and there is little chance of being caught. It is important to realize that as adolescents are becoming more in tune with technology, they are engaged in many more activities that are online based, therefore spending more time online. (Tokunaga, 2010).
Bullying does not just exist in the schoolyard. With the twenty- first century internet is what people use now. And Internet has changed to being a use full tool, to now were people kill people 's self-esteem ,and more. Cyberbullying has become a big problem around the world and it needs to stop.
We live in a time period in society, where were constantly communicate through technology. It has become a part of our daily lives for not only millions of adults but also for our children. In 2001, it was estimated that 17 million youth between the ages of 12 and 17 used the Internet (Lenhart, Rainie, & Lewis, 2001). This is important information when recognizing how much we use technology for educational purposes, social networking and online communication which are important for a student’s relationship with their friends, family, and school (Lenhart et al., 2001). We use technology so much, we do not know how to function without it. Even in the classroom, technology has been integrated to enhance the student’s educational experience. Although, there has been a positive impact in technology for our students there has also been a negative impact as well. Which is the misuse of technology, students can say and do things to others without revealing their identity. Although, there are harmless situations that occur, this has opened the door for students to interact with others aggressively without any repercussions. This issue which many of our students face at some point or another is called Cyberbullying.
