Sending a text through a mobile phone or sending an email through the internet used to be a harmless way to communicate with friends and family when weekends became clogged with assignments and work. As technology advanced so did bullying. Bullies began to send threatening text messages, send harassing emails, and use the likes of social networking sites to torment, humiliate, embarrass or target other students. Cyber bullying uses e-technology as a means of victimising others by e-mail, chat room discussion groups, instant messaging, webpages or SMS (text messaging) ,with the intention of harming another person (Cyber Safety Glossary ,16 Jun, 2010). “There’s no safe place anymore. The surveys conducted by Health Education Students show many Year 9’s use behaviours which Health Education Students determined to be associated with popularity. These behaviours include using offensive language, uploading suggestive photos of themselves, and uploading inappropriate photos of others. The second was for students to follow their peers. Grace Miller (2011) whilst in a class discussion stated she believed all students just wanted to fit in, thus they followed their peers to make friends. Behaviours found of the Year 9’s believed to support this were defending their friend if they were being bullied (found in the pre survey, but not in the post) which according to the Health education survey, 67% of students would do. Spreading rumours online was another behaviour believed to be linked. They third hypothesised reason for the stakeholders to cyber bully, was the possibility they have been bullied. Many reported harassment and threating messages, and as cyber bullying can be anonymous, targeting others over the internet can help make them feel ‘strong’.
Socio-cultural factors can influence cyber bullying in many ways. In modern society today, freedom of speech has been a main concern to delinquents as to what they say on the web. Although, cyberbullying has turned into a major issue online that has gotten the schools’ attention and turn towards the security of their students. To accomplish nurturing their students’ safety, they have punished pupils for what they say on the Internet that is harmful in account of others. Alternatively, the Constitution believes this goes against the First Amendment and violates the students’ rights. Schools should be authorized to limit students’ online speech to decrease the matter of cyberbullying which has affected us in many ways.

Five different forms of bullying was reported, with insults having the highest percentage reported, embarrassing pictures being the lowest, and threats, privacy violation, and password theft in between. Almost 1/5 of the respondents reported repeated experiences, and 72% reported that they had been bullied online during the past year. In 2002, Finn (2004) documented survey results that 10 to 15% of 339 students at University of New Hampshire had experienced multiple e-mail or IM messages that “threatened, insulted or harassed” (pg. 2) them. A survey that was given to 666 students at a university in Turkey in 2009 was used to assess the psychological needs of the cyberbully. The results that were found from this survey were “that aggression and succorance positively predicted cyberbullying, but interception negatively predicted it” (pg. 2). Also, 22.5% of students reported that they had cyberbullied at least once, and 55.3% reported that they had been a victim of cyberbullying at least once in their lifetime (Dilmac, 2009). This is different from the other articles because it talks more about what cyberbullying is and a bunch of facts about it, and less about the issue right now. The audience for this article is anyone who is curious about online harassment, or anyone who wants to try to help stop bullying because of issues they have been in or seen in their own life. This is perfect for my essay because it shows a lot of information that I can use to better understand my topic.

It’s really difficult to not read what’s intended for you, especially if you don’t know what it’s about beforehand. People still believe that the victim can just tell their parents. However if the bully is unknown what can the parent do to help? Nowadays parents aren’t as tech savvy as teenagers are, therefore if the teenager can’t stop it what can a parent do? The personal photos that one chooses to include in his or her profile can affect the ability of how one is seen. Having the ability to represent yourself as smart or funny and being able to say you 're associated with certain groups are what keeps future targets safe.
