Twenty percent of high school students admit to being a victim and/or participating in cyberbullying (“Cyberbullying”). This form of bullying that takes place on the Internet, is beginning to become a major problem in our society. Cyber bullying must be terminated in order to prevent teenage depression, fights breaking out in schools, and adolescences growing up to become criminals.
Depression in teenagers is a major issue in the world around us. Students suffering might not be able to focus on their schoolwork when all they can think about is the person who is bullying them and/or what the bully has said. They could be fearful of how bad the bully makes them feel or how much they just want to avoid the bully. But sadness and depression could easily lead to anger and anger can easily lead to conflict. According to Yalda Uhls, “Most studies have found that the majority of victims of cyber bullying know the perpetrator, with many bullies being peers from school.” If the victim of cyberbullying is attending the same school as the perpetrator, then there is always a risk of a fight breaking out between the two. No one is safe when it comes to cyberbullying. Not only are children being hurt emotionally, but they are being hurt physically too.
There have been many cases of teenage cyber bullies growing up to be real criminals. Children who are surrounded by Internet tormentors are not always safe since delinquency and violence have been associated with cyber bullying many times before (“Cyberbullying”). Some cyber bullies get so used to bullying others as a child, that they quickly become accustomed to breaking the law in other ways. Even on school grounds, children must keep their guard up as "Cyberbullying has also been linked to possession of weapons on school grounds” (“Cyberbullying”). Bullying has been around since the beginning of time. Parents may remember when they were kids and the bully would pick on them or their friends by stealing lunch money or just getting beat up, and that was the end of it. The victims remember the hurt, frustration, and sadness it caused. However, these days, bullying is not just happening on the playground or at the bus stop, it is happening on the Internet and on cell phones, making it possible to bully a child 24 hours a day with multiple bullies and thousands of kids watching. Cyberbullying follows children nonstop and into the safety of their house. Sometimes kids are afraid to inform their parents about the cyberbullying that they will think its there fault. Or that their parents will call the bullies parents or other parents, making the bullying worse. However, the effect and pain that comes from cyberbullying is real. People underestimate cyberbullying, just because it is happening online and not in person. Cyberbullying can lead to many different factors like drinking, and drugs, poor grades, depression, eating disorders. Many students have even taken their own lives because of another student saying something to them online. Cyberbullying has been taking place a lot more in middle and high schools because of the increased usage of social media networks and technology. Cyberbullying is worse and more harmful than traditional bullying.
Bullies start at a young age and carry on, this helps them feel good about what they are doing and who they are as a person. The only way to make a difference and try to stop bullying and cyberbullying is if the parents are there to help. “Parents of bullies are advised to take the problem seriously, looking for the causes of anger or frustration, letting them know that hurtful behavior will not be tolerated, supervising their behavior more closely, “punishing”bullying with positive acts toward others and teaching nonviolent ways of solving problems.” (PERSONAL HEALTH pg. 3) This illustrates that not only the school and parents but the community to must collaborate to control bullying. Parents need to supervise their children on social media and all places in their life, until the children can understand that this is not okay and that we can stand up to bullying. Bullying and cyberbullying can lead to serious causes to the victims and everyone around them. “It is found that children who bully are at risk for engaging in more serious violent acts, like fighting frequently and carrying weapons.” (PERSONAL HEALTH pg.) This proves that the actions of the bullies are long term effects. If someone is to hurt themselves or one another because of how someone made them feel not only will those certain people be hurting inside but the other family and friends in their lives. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages in an threatening nature or tearing down an individuals character based on religion, gender, ethnicity, or disability. In terms of effects overall, cyberbullying has increased the use of communication via technology and has become more common among teenagers (Cabral 3). Technology has made it easy for bullies to find individuals via social media in the privacy of their on own homes., which has allowed them to express how they feel anonomously. In the article by Brett Warnke, it states, “As bullies… cyberbullying has infiltrated the confines of the home…,” which states that people can’t escape cyberbullies, even in the supposed safety of their own home. Even if the victim of a cyberbully moves house or schools, the bully could simply continue the harassment online. Situations like this can be prevented by the addition of penalties to cyber \bullies, such as community service hours or a hefty fine. According to researchers, the targets of this new type of harassment are more likely to have less friends than their peers , be more isolated, and more of an outcast before and after school hours. To start off, Teens who are the targets of cyberbullying or any kind of bullying are prone to feel like they deserve the harassment they are receiving. They believe that they are not deserving of friends and becomes distrusting of anyone who wants to be their friend, wondering if it is just to learn their secrets and spread them all over the internet. Secondly, victims can experience anger, frustration, embarrassment, sadness, and severe depression, often causing a lack of focus on school work. In some cases, these adolescents have to change schools due to these jarring crimes. Finally, Cyberbullying has also been tied to delinquency, violence, drug or alcohol abuse, as well as possessing weapons on school property. “Severe, long-term, or frequent cyber bullying can leave both victims and bullies at greater risk of anxiety, depression, and other stress-related disorders. In some rare but highly publicized cases, some kids have turned to suicide. Experts say that kids who are bullied — and the bullies themselves — are at a higher risk of suicidal thoughts, attempts, and completed suicides.” (database). It is not surprising that the targets of cyberbullying would be more prone to suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and other issues because of being harassed therefore are scared to be online, or even go anywhere without feeling like everyone is teasing
Many negative effects are outcomes of cyber bullies. The impact cyber bullying has on kids is detrimental. Victims can develop psychological problems. For example, victims begin having anxiety, lower self-esteem, and frustration. They may also be diagnosed with depression. It’s tough to ignore cyber bullying. Compared to school bullies, internet bullies cause their victim more emotional pain. Children and teenagers are able to escape school bullies when they return home. However targets of cyber bullying don’t have that advantage.

While teenagers are widely affected by bullying in person, the internet has widened the playing field. Cyber Bullying (and bullying in general) is done with the primary purpose of inflicting emotional distress on the victim. Much more of the cruel incidents will occur if the issue is not fixed. The thought of others not knowing who is doing the bullying could be the reason why teens find it more appealing to cyber bully. More and more teenagers are committing cyber bullying which shows a need for stiffer consequences for their actions. Teens are aware of the effects bullying causes and its consequences to others. Cyber bullying has been a topic for scholarly inquiry, political debate, and policy reform since the commercialization of the Internet. Pre-internet bullying involved socially marginalized children and teenagers picking on their friends and other marginalized children at school. Traditional discipline included detentions, phone calls to their parents, and some type of discipline between the children involved. Today however, for bullies has dramatically changed and the risk-reward balance has been significantly tilted in favor of the bullies.
If the consequences for cyber bullying were consistent and more harsh cyber bullying wouldn 't be as common as it is today. If people would really see what cyber bullying does to people they might think twice about doing it to somebody or they might not even do it at all. 19.6% of kids reported being cyber bullied once or twice a month 5.3% reported being cyber bullied once or twice a week and 3.1% reported being cyber bullied almost everyday. Studies indicate that cyber-bullying incidents have quadrupled in past five years (Ross). Cyber-bullying has become a huge issue recently. Every time you turn on the news there is another bullying, or a suicide related to bullying, incident being reported. “Love is louder” has been a common phrase among celebrities and influential figures lately. They are trying to send out a message to their followers saying that bullying is not right and should not be tolerated. The expansion of communication technologies is widening the way bully’s can torture their victims. There should be zero tolerance when it comes to bullying. Students should be expelled with no arguments.
