Title: Understanding Cyber Violence in contemporary society Research Question The literature review will compare cyber violence to traditional interpersonal violence in order to comprehend the characteristics of cyber violence in contemporary society. Introduction Cyber violence was defined as “an aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individual, using electronic forms of contact, repeatedly and over time against a victim who cannot easily defend him or herself.” (Smith, Maddavi, Carvalho, Fisher, Russell, and Tippett, 2008: 376). The prevalence and impacts of cyber violence will be discussed in the literature review (Zweig, Dank, Yanher, and Lachman 2013; Madlock and Westermann 2011). Subsequently, competing theories regarding cyber violence will be introduced. Some scholars presented evidence to support the position that cyber violence was driven by more malicious intentions compared to traditional forms of interpersonal violence (Suler, 2004). Conversely, other empirical studies provided evidence to support the position that cyber violence was a reincarnation of traditional forms of interpersonal violence in a modern context (Bauman and Newman 2013; Toledano, Werch, and Wiens 2015).
