However, there are some aspects of cybernetics that may not be important in today’s society because of the evolution in humankind from the early 1920’s to today. In this time and age, cybernetics continues to be in tandem with social construction, and continues to affect psychology, especially in marriage and family therapy. First-order cybernetics will focus on explaining what is happening inside a system from an outside position, with problems identified as being a part of a real, knowable reality (Becvar & Becvar, 2006). The therapist, in reality, is thrown in a role of an expert who sets goals by the theories given, and the client is set to follow the therapist’s goals. However, with second-order therapists, he or she will understand that as an observer, they are part o that which is being observed (Becvar & Becvar, 2006). In this way, the therapist’s goal and ideas is to continue seeking ways to modify and understand the client with emphasis in not looking for specific answers as reality, and in time, truth is co-created. This is how a therapist and client can share a “working relationship”, and how both approaches define a therapist’s role. Historical Impact of cybernetics and social construction theorists Cybernetics could not have been expanded without the works of Mara Selvini Palazzoli, Luigi Boscolo, Gianfranco Ceechin, Guilarna Prata who were influenced by Bateson’s studies on cybernetics. However, it was George Bateson along with Jay Haley and John Weakland in understanding the core system of cybernetics.
