Checkouts, by Cynthia Rylant. Some might say they can relate to the theme of this story. The author uses the theme of love between a boy and a girl. They first meet at a supermarket when the girl was shopping and the boy was her bag boy. For weeks, they liked each other but too afraid to admit it. The literary elements that was used in this story is, mood and climax. The girl moved to Cincinnati with her parents to start a new life. She was not happy about the move at all. She begged them to let her finish school in her hometown but they said no. She stayed in her room for months, looking at old memories from her hometown. This quote shows that Freddie had to move from his childhood home in San Diego to an unfamiliar town. He had to leave all of his friends and start over without knowing anyone or anything about the setting. This setting helps to create the theme because he had to learn to accept change, specifically meeting new people and going to a new school. “Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction short story about a fourteen year old boy, Michael, whose parents have died and is trying to get used to living with his Aunt Esther. In order to do that he has to stop fighting with her. In the beginning, they fight and Michael storms out the door. Soon, he comes home with a hermit crab that starts a little bit of a bond. Finally, Aunt Esther comes into his room and tells him that Sluggo, the hermit crab, needs a girlfriend. Throughout the story, Michael and Aunt Esther learn to get along.
Have you ever heard of someone falling in love over a jar of mayonnaise? I bet you have never! Sounds crazy, but in the story Checkouts by Cynthia Rylant, that is how a bag boy and a girl found love for each other at a grocery store. It was the bag boy’s first day of employment and like anyone who has started a new job, he was nervous. Standing at his assigned checkout lane, he noticed a pretty girl and when he got the opportunity to bag her groceries, his anxiousness got the best of him and his hands gave way, letting her jar of mayonnaise plop to the ground.

She talks about how she is getting ready for a trip away from her hometown, and she never plans on coming back. Throughout the story she explains that she has grown apart from her hometown and the people in it, especially her mother. She mentions some of the things her mother has done for her but she never shows appreciation for it. She does not want to go away, but she also does not want to stay.

Many people don't know about the Cherokee. People also think of the Cherokee and other natives are what they see in the movies, they are wrong. The Cherokee lived in the eastern part of the United States, their homelands were Tennessee Oklahoma, Alabama, North Carolina. The Cherokee counted 285,000 today tribal members, and the eastern band counted 9,000. The Cherokee were great warriors that protected their tribe. The men were the ones to fight, hunt, and play games like stickball so that they could stay in shape for hunting or fighting. The women did the housework(they took care of the children, cooked the food, washed and dry the clothes). The Cherokee were known for being kicked out of their home lands, This was called the trail of tears. There's children were forced from their parents and put into schools. Loisel dreams of at the beginning of the short story. “The Necklace” is one of the many short stories that use literary elements to elevate the story and keep the reader engaged in the author’s writing.
