“SLIP” Contemporary Dance Critique As I began watching the dance, I immediately felt a connection between the elements of movement and the music of the piece as if the music was words on a page and the movements like illustrations. I also began noticing Laban characteristics of flow and space throughout the duo’s dance that coupled with the music to create imagery of a couple struggling to find strength in their relationship.
I felt that the dance was extensively dependent on the music, specifically the lyrics. As the repetition of the lyrics began, the dancers began the repeat similar movements; for example, when the lyrics repeat “slip, slip, slipping down”, the dancers physically slip away from each other as when she slowly slides to the floor only to be caught by his grasp. The music coupled with the lyrical movements of the dance made me feel as if the dance was telling a story of a couple. The music starts with a smooth swaying rhythmic feel steadily intensifying as the dance progresses. The movements of the duo matched the music starting smooth and steady but becoming sharp and direct in certain aspects of the dance, such as when he holds her in his arms almost as if she is lifeless and swaying to the music; however, in contrast later as the beat picks up, her movements are direct with sharp angular lines of her legs as she separates from her partner. I feel like the music allowed them to tell a story of a couple passionately in love but struggling to continue on. The intimate nature of the dance and consistent push and pull effect from the dancers alludes that they are in a relationship. The entire dance the couple is intertwined with each other, slipping away separately but pulled back in by the partner, until ultimately he slips through her grasp as he forcefully pulls away leaving her lying on the floor.
Throughout the majority of the song, the dancers expressed free flow such as when they began the dance with wave like motions of their arms intertwined with the beat of the music. The fluidity of the movements continued as the male dancer lifted the female into the air and across his shoulders, she then slid down him as if her body was free and he was in control.
