Cathay Williams, born into slavery in Independence, Missouri in September of 1844, was determined to become more than a house slave. In 1861, the Union Forces captured slaves as “contraband” and forced them to serve the military in roles such as cooks, laundresses, or nurses (“Cathay Williams”, n.d.). Randall Hank Williams, or also known as Hank Williams Jr., was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He is the son of Hank Williams, and he has a son, Hank Williams lll. Hank Jr’s dad died before he was even 4 years old on January 1,1953. Hank Jr. is famous for being a country musician/artist like his deceased dad. Without his father present, Hank’s mother helped begin his music career around age 8. She moved them out of Louisiana and into Tennessee. His mom knew already that he had an amazing voice. Billy Gene Phillips Sr. was born to Clara Faye and Carl James Phillips on January 15, 1958 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. My grandfather grew up in Oklahoma City for the most part of his life. He was raised with three siblings, James Dean Phillips, Donna Faye Conway, and Virginia Ann Terry. He was the second to youngest child in his family. At the age of sixteen he met my grandmother Bonnie Walker, which later married on February 6, 1976 at the age of nineteen. They lived in Dibble, Oklahoma, where they raised five kids, David Phillips, Billy Phillips Jr., Bonnie Phillips, Regenia Phillips, and Virginia Phillips. He had seven grandchildren. In 2003 he fought his son Billy Phillips Jr. In a custody battle for three of his grandchildren, because he didn't believe they were given the best life.

There are many African American public figures, who have inspired the hearts and minds of eager Black youth. These individuals have instilled within the community a sense of purpose and promise which has carried over into following generations. From the time we wake up, until we go back to sleep at night, we use at least one thing that has been made by an African- American inventor. Whether it is something as big as a traffic light or as little as a hair brush, black inventors have made major contributions to our everyday lives. Many people know about the big inventions, but both small and big inventions have impacted America. (Lund 2008)

African american inventors play a big part in our history. Without them who knows how mos of this stuff would come into existence if it wasn't for them. And I must say the devices and tools they created are tremendously helpful in everyday life in today's generation. Madam C.J walker was an american women who became a self-made millionaire. Also the first american woman who accomplished this. This proves that anything you put your mind that it will have a good impact on you.
