“The main purpose of a text is to give an insight into the complexity of human nature”
The film The Dark Horse directed by James Napier Robertson is a film based off the life experiences of speed chess champion Genesis Potini. Throughout the film the director uses multiple film techniques to develop an insight into the complexity of human nature. Robertson highlights the complexity of human nature by expressing faults humans hold such as discrimination, self deprecation and our need for support. Robertson explores the unconscious nature we experience as humans and the effects of being surrounded by toxic people. Robertson does this to educate the audience helping us become more aware of the common flaws we experience as well as entertaining

During the film we see Mana suffer from self deprecation as he constantly puts himself down because he believes the gang life is “where I belong”. Mana was raised surrounded by the members of Ariki’s gang who treat Mana with no respect and act violently towards him. The director shows how this rough upbring affects Mana’s life through the low key lighting that is always present in his home. This helps give the impression that Mana’s life is dull and sinister. We see the deeper effects the gang has on Mana when he says “no one ever thought I would do that” after winning a game of chess. This quote shows that Mana had no encouragement throughout his life causing him to doubt himself and be stuck in a negative mindset. Because of this Mana never thought he would accomplish anything. The purpose of this is to show how easy it is to believe we’re worthless when we’re constantly told so. Robertson wants to show the audience how easily human nature can be influenced by those surrounding us and how important it is to try to avoid these toxic relationships. We see the negative impact of being gang affiliated through Mana’s attitude and behaviour. We see how quick to anger Mana is when Gen tries to stand up for him against the gang, as he snaps at Gen then jumps up from his seat and storms out of the room. Later when expressing his anger towards the gang to Gen Mana says, “I want to kill them”, showing how he has developed a violent nature. Robertson explores the depth of human nature by showing the audience how our childhood and the people we surround ourselves with mould us as people. He shows that kids growing up without love and support affects an individual's self worth as they don’t feel worth of love, ultimately affecting their future as they find it harder to form relationships and connections with others. The purpose of this is to show the
Out of the Past is definitely an interesting movie with a lot of things to talk about. I will touch briefly upon two main things I have noticed during the screen: the film noire genre and the image of the femme fatale.
“If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen...” (pg. 54). Throughout the course of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, we familiarize ourselves with the exceptional hardships that Ishmael has experienced as a child soldier, in Sierra Leone, and what actions he takes to overcome them. Despite the fact that Ishmael has been through these devastating hardships and that he became the fear that he himself feared, Ishmael is able to instill hope and keep the reader going through the themes of powerful memories, nature and redemption. He does this through the use of powerful memories that contrast the fear and danger of the war with the remembrance of the beauty of life. Furthermore, nature leaves the reader striving
“Beware gentle knight, there is no greater monster than reason (McCarthy, pg.146).” This is a theme that runs throughout both the novel and especially through John Grady. John Grady Cole has had the most consistent and dedicated views based on his own morality. The principles which he lives by seem to be the only things that govern how he acts, despite the consequences that arise from having followed these values. His beliefs in the power of justice, honor, and loyalty cause him to treat the world in a highly idealized manner. The irrational amount of idealism and heightened sense of morality that drives John Grady to commit each of his actions eventually becomes
High Noon, which is an old western type of movie, is about a sheriff named Will Kane that has to fight to save his town. "The Most Dangerous Game", which is a short story about a man named Rainsford who has to fight for his survival. High Noon and "The Most Dangerous Game" have similar main characters and similar story patterns, but have a different overall theme.
All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy explores many different themes about humans and the natural world. The story’s often vacant landscapes, and barren descriptions promote an idea of isolation throughout the text. One of the only recurring motifs throughout the story that promotes a sense of life are horses. Horses clearly stick out in the otherwise depressing landscape, and McCarthy utilizes this along with other techniques to develop an overall theme to the story. This theme, that humans and the natural world are somehow interconnected, is clearly portrayed by the role that horses play in the novel.
The notion of humanity is a picture intricately painted using the ideals and morals that define us as human beings in contextual society. The audience is influenced by the morals and values present through techniques in texts to paint their own image of humanity. Our ideals and morals that differ in texts through context, scrupulously shape our image of humanity
In the Preface, Agee conveys that this “is a book only by necessity. More seriously, it is an effort in human actuality, in which the reader is no less centrally involved than the
Decency fades like dust in the wind of the modern era of our world. Through the lense of Ishmael Beah we get to see the inhumanities done in South African culture. Beah is taken as a young boy and it placed in the army. Through all the journeys Beah goes through he ends up living the new york city and lives a life full of actions that are meant to please others and help the people suffering in the horrible South African conditions. When identifying and analyzing the theme in A Long Way Gone: memoirs of a boy soldier it is shown that the there is a lack of innocence and morality amongst the modern civilizations in this day and age. Beah's only way to survive was to choose to kill, expect the worst, or learn to erase the pain and sorrow that was inflicted upon him. He learned to blur out the obvious things that were put in front of him.

The influence and impact that the horses make in Cormac McCarthy’s novel, All the Pretty Horses, is reflected in the title itself, particularly in their relation to the story’s protagonist, John Grady Cole. All the Pretty Horses is a true coming-of-age tale, and while in the most grounded sense the horses are depicted as practical assets to the boys, McCarthy uses a progressively emotional tone to portray the significance the horses have throughout the development of the story. The novel’s setting in the heart of Western American culture underlies the horses’ importance as the social foundation of the time, and the author’s passionate descriptions gives them qualities analogous to that of humans. This sense of anthropomorphism inspires the intimate relationship that John Grady shares with all horses throughout the novel, a bond that ties to his deep understanding of their world. The relationship between men and horses is a central theme that is tested throughout John’s journey, as he matures to find that his initial romantic conception of society does not align with the reality of his experiences. McCarthy’s use of the title represents the development of this perspective and emphasizes the irony of the protagonist’s naivety, as John’s preconceived idealism is later refuted by his experiences.
Ever since the existence of a civilization, the fundamental question of how and why; to identify and explain the human’s nature and how man is ought to live, has been the key element in philosophical world. Many philosophers provided and made public of how they viewed this world as, and the human in it, and experimented themselves with their approaches, however, no philosophers could possibly bring forth the same views as other philosophers nor yield an answer which do not leave a sense of doubt in our mind. None of the theories were incorrect, but none of them were right in the sense that even two

In the film Crash (2004), the director’s use of internal conflict reveals that the main idea of the film, which is that some people stereotype others based on their skin color or countries of origin without knowing them, which is dangerous because it can lead to violence and unrest. Haggis, the director, uses the film to suggest that people should not judge anyone just because of their skin color or countries because it may cause people to hate each other.
