of his family. We understand our world more clearly because this films are representing the real truth of our world that people use violence on their family because some are using it for the wrong reasons but other like to use violence on their family to keep them in fear and that is the true meaning of war. These two texts are similar in a way that people use violence to their own gains for killing, rape this was also used in families as seen in Once Were Warriors by Uncle Bully and Jake this happens in war too. These texts is linked to torment because of the violence in their lives and families lives, since Once Were Warriors Beth Heke family was being tormented by Jake Heke and his friend Uncle Billy. Two other texts that are connected by the theme, torment people cause each other are Dark Shadows by Tim Burton and Crash directed by Paul Haggis. The theme of torment is presented in the film Crash because we see several stories towards a person’s life in L.A. This is a world where slavery existed and acts of racial discrimination comes from an enforcer of the law; Officer John Ryan. He and Officer Hansen are patrolling the area one night where they both spot a couple in a vehicle doing some explicit things. Officer Ryan ask questions about what they were doing because he thought something was suspicious so Officer Ryan starts patting down Christine Thayer, but really he was molesting her rather than finding illegal substances or weapons. Hansen as he knew if he got in the way, there would be trouble and the same went for Cameron Thayer. This is linked to torment because the film was based on racism seeing Cameron Thayer was a black man and Officer Ryan and Hansen were white they will blame Cameron though what Officer Ryan did to Christine Thayer and Ryan will not be blamed for the crime seeing that this is a racist film. Cameron Thayer cannot do anything or say anything about it, so that is why Cameron Thayer lives in torment because he lives in fear of being arrested of something he didn’t do and fear of getting fired because the boss is racist. This is similar to the way of Dark Shadows because Angelique Bouchard the witch curses Barnabas and the Collins family because Barnabas Collins broke
Tim O’Brien uses literary devices such as Imagery and repetition to show how conflict affects humanity. It changed the way they think to care for what they have and the time they have with the people they care for. In the book it says “And in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war. It's about sunlight. It's about special way thar dawn spreads out on a river when you must cross the river and march into the mountain and do things you are afraid to do. It's about love and memory. It's about sorrow. It's about sisters who never write back and people who never listen” (81). It’s telling us that you should care for what you have and the memories and the sorrows.
Does every family love and respect one another? Are all families in a healthy relationship with each other? In the book Mad Shadows, the answer to these questions are clearly displayed. Mad shadows, is a fictional novel written by Marie-Claire Blair. It tells the story of an unusual family who are in a prolong feud with one another, which is the by-product of their illusions. The character, Louise, is the mother of the family. Her superficial view of life and constant denial of truth is the root cause of the dysfunction, misery, and jealousy in her family. Which consequently, fuels her own death and destruction by the end of her tragic life.
In the film, Night of the Living Dead, the movie starts with two siblings, John and Barbara, driving to their father's grave to drop off flowers. John is reluctant to be there and is eager to leave while Barbara is trying to pray. John teases her like when they were children saying “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!” when they both see an unknown man. Barbara goes to apologize to the unknown man but it seems he is dazed and kills John. Barbara escapes and finds herself at an empty house. In the house, she meets Ben, who borders up to the windows after taking down 3 undead. After a bit of listening to a radio for the current status of the state of emergency, Harry and Tom come upstairs. We learn that two men, two women, and a child had been in the basement of the house during Barbara’s and Ben’s struggle with the undead. After much argumentation on if the basement or upstairs was safer between Harry and Ben, Harry went back downstairs to his wife and child. Tom and his wife, Judy, stayed upstairs with Ben believing they could properly border up the windows together. After much convincing from Helen, Harry’s wife, Harry and she join the others upstairs. While listening on the radio, they are given more updates of the state of emergency. The radio announcer suggests instead of staying in place, to now go to one of the designated “safe areas”. When places are announced, Tom says that one of the
A phrase Ishmael wrote showing the true meaning behind war is, “Only two people came out, a woman and a young child. They were on fire, and ran up and down the village slamming themselves against everything in their way... The woman fell and stoped moving.” (Beah,94). This illitrates the terrible events Beah witnessed and was apart of.
The film Moonlight was released October 21, 2016. Moonlight is all African American cast, and was awarded over 25 awards including the Academy Award for best picture. This film is a coming of age story that follows the dramatic ups and downs of the life of Chiron, a young Africa American man growing up in Miami. The plot begins from the time he is in elementary school to the time he reaches adulthood. The plot is structured in three stages of the life of Chiron and touches on the topics of the struggle of dysfunctional households via socialization, sexuality and sexual identity, physical and emotion abuse, and the process of accepting ones self.
This is a criticism of Moonlight, a film directed by Barry Jenkins. It is a coming-of-age story, telling the journey of a young gay black man named Chiron. Through linear character development the film follows a young Chiron from adolescence into adulthood while growing up with alpha males in Miamis black ghettos. The Story is told in three parts, with a different actor playing the lead role in each section: a young Chiron named “Little”, as a teen named “Chiron”, and an adult named “Black”. Despite a compelling lead performance by Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris, and its great soundtrack, Moonlight falls flat and never gets out of the shadow of its typical cliche plot, all the while, the film continued to never overcome the obstacle of
The movie Before Night Falls directed by Julian Schnabel offers viewers a glimpse of how the homosexual community in Cuba was being mistreated under Fidel Castro’s regime. The true story is told in the eyes of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. The film depicts Arenas life in Cuba and all of the awful experiences that he had to deal with as a homosexual. Eventually he was arrested for false accusations of being a molester, however, he was actually under arrest for being a homosexual. Between the 1930s and 1990s, the Communist Cuba was abusive to the LGBT community as shown in their actions of harassment towards homosexuals, imprisoning the homosexuals, or sending them to re-education camps.
Moonlight is an American drama film that chronicles the life of African-American male Chiron, who is being raised by a careless mother in a harsh Miami neighbourhood. Its most prominent themes are love, stereotypes and identity. The filmmakers create meaning from these through combining different elements of aesthetics (the style or look of a motion picture). Aesthetic effect refers to the practise of using different elements of a film (mise-en-scene, sound, cinematography and editing) to generate film form.
To most, when asked to define what Gothic is, they will state that it is similar to any other story, just with more “darkness.” This is because Gothic stories all have a classic story line. First, there is the main character’s back story, if any is then told. Next, there are events that lead up to a horrible incident that is the climax of the story. Lastly, the character finds some way to fix the situation or free him- or herself from it. They might go insane, commit suicide, run away, or watch other characters perish. However, readers would be greatly mistaken if they thought that this was all that there is to a Gothic story; there is much more to the Gothic than meets the
Christians say that Jesus taught them that they should try to change the offender to not seek revenge. The 6th commandment says people should not kill yet society would employ a paid executioner if the death penalty was re-introduced. There could be a mistake being made by an innocent person for a crime he or she did not commit, there is also evidence that this has happened in the past.
Throughout this class, various discussions and blogs have been used to analyze the different elements of films such as theme, cinematic techniques and genre. It is time to bring all of these separate elements together in the analysis of one specific film, according to class text, “analyzing levels of meaning below the surface story can greatly enhance enjoyment as well as understanding of a film” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014. p. 10.03). There are several different approaches to film analysis including formalist, auteurist, and generic or any combination thereof. Utilizing a genre theory lens, the 1956 film The Searchers will be analyzed addressing contextual information, story/plot, aesthetic choices, social/personal impact and how these areas come together to develop the film.
I did not really enjoy this show for many reasons. First of all, it might be because of what the actors were talking about, they were talking about a subject that I am not interested in, which is, baseball I did not understand the rules of this game and I am sure many of the audience did not understand that. I was thinking why did they choose this sport? I mean there are many sports they could choose, and these sports more popular than baseball, such as soccer, basketball, or even football. It is very different when you watch a play it has no connection to you than a play talk about subject you enjoy to watch or talk about.
Horror films are movies that aim to elicit a strong physiological reaction in the viewer, such as raised heartbeat and fear. Three horror films by the names of Psycho, Scream and The Messengers will be analysed and compared to an episode of the popular children’s show Shaun the Sheep. Five elements will be addressed in this analysis, those being camera techniques, Mise-en-scene, Editing, Lighting and Sound.
In my list of movies that always make me cry is the movie “Ghost” which was released on July 13, 1990. This movie made that summer really worth while and gave us romance, comedy and much to think about. The movie starred Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg.
Bases of power refer to the methods that managers and leaders utilize to influence their employees. When examining bases of power, the concept of authority must also be considered. These two are interconnected attributes tied to the behavior of superiors over subordinates (Encyclopedia for business, 2011). The five bases of power are identified as coercive, legitimate, reward, referent and expert.
