The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, is an inspirational novel which moves the reader to make a change in the world. William grew up in Malawi, Africa where magic ruled and modern science was a total mystery, along with his mother, father, and sisters. They family grew maize on their farm and always had enough to sell and to eat throughout the winter, until one dreadful season. The country fell into a drought which lead to a famine, resulting in a myriad of deaths, some personal to William. William was then forced to drop out of school, which he adored, because his family could not afford it. Throughout all of this darkness, there was light. There was still a dream. William aspired to be educated, and when he
As a child, I used to hear the phrase 'lukso ng dugo', which is a Tagalog phrase to refer to that feeling you get when you meet someone, and by fate, turns out to be one of your own. As I was reading the Scarlet Letter, I realized that most of Pearl's actions and who she is are rooted from that. However, most who read the book only see Pearl as a living symbol and not an actual character. In the Scarlet Letter, Pearl is not just a representation of Hester and Dimmesdale’s actions, she is a child and is rather affected by the whole ordeal and had strived throughout the story to get Dimmesdale to acknowledge her as his child.
With many diverse cultures coming together for the first time in America’s melting pot, it’s no wonder they each honor the environment differently. The Native Americans, Virginians, and New England Puritans each had their own unique perspective on how to take advantage of the New World’s resources. Unlike the Native Americans, who respect and view themselves equal to the environment, the Virginians had a mentality of controlling and dominating the earth for England. The Puritans, however, simply wanted to start their own community for religious freedom, rather than claiming land for another country.
When I began my Civics class, thinking it potentially difficult and boring, I did not initially look forward to this project. However, as I did each activity, I found myself enjoying each and every one. From sitting in a board meeting to collecting trash, I discovered something new in all of the ways I volunteered. Not only did the people I volunteered for gain something through my service, but I feel that I gained a lot as well.
My want to attend a service academy came as a surprise to no one. Both of my parents served in the military and in a traditional kid fashion I wanted to be just like them. But the last thing my parents wanted was for me to enlist. They always told me I was too smart to not get a college education and to enter the military as an officer. I chose the Navy as my first choice after listening to my stepfather’s stories about his time on a fast attack submarine. Now I was set on this path to hopefully one day become a Midshipman and Naval Officer at probably around the age of eight or nine. As I grew up and matured in my academic interests I found that my best subjects as well as those I shared the most interest in were those containing math and
I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I’ve always been really passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service I was delighted because I’ve wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even though I’ve only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see the difference it has made in the community.
4. What has been the most satisfactory thing that you have ever done for someone while on the job?
For this service learning project, my group and I organized a goods drive. We placed donation boxes around Denton for art-therapy supplies. The group also held an event on November 6, 2017, at Texas Woman’s University to encourage students to make donations. All the donations went to the Child Advocacy Center in Denton; this organization provides assistance to children that have been victims of physical or sexual abuse. This service learning project relates to the theories and ideas in chapter 13 and chapter 14 of Women’s Lives: A Psychological Exploration. Chapter 13 relates to mental health, and it signifies the importance of social support during stressful
Child welfare services are a very large and important part of human services work. When looking at the world today, in the department of child services, we must look at our history. During the colonial America, children were indenture servitudes expected to work. There was a later shift in history, to the panatlantic slave trade. During this time, slave children were expected to work just like adults. Many children died during slavery and their slave masters raped many young girls who were slaves. Then, in the industrial era, child labor was used in factories; children were just seen as little adults, who were capable of doing all that adults could do. When this was abolished, there was a huge problem of orphans, which opened the doors for
In order to obtain peer reviewed research articles related to the impact of the psychological contract on job satisfaction in community mental health care workers it is important to review research that has been completed in a variety of researchers and in different settings. The databases that were selected to locate peer reviewed articles for this paper where Academic Search Complete and ProQuest Psychology. Tutorials were available for each of these databases and ProQuest was used to learn how to navigate through the data base since it was not a familiar data base to this author.
