Daughters of American Agriculture
I believe that I would be an excellent candidate for the Daughters of American Agriculture Scholarship. This scholarship would allow me to pursue my passion in the Agricultural Industry.
Growing up on a third generation beef and crop farm has helped me gain a love of agriculture. Since I was a child I have been helping out the farm and have had a love of agriculture ever since. I currently own four of my own beef cows and each year I raise the calves to sell in the fall. My future dream is to take over the family farm after I finish college, as well as work as an agricultural loan officer. In high school I joined FFA. This organization truly changed my perspective on Agricultural as a whole. It made me realize

After my college graduation I would like to pursue my dream job of becoming an Agricultural Loan Officer at a bank or another company. I would really enjoy working with different people and farmers and discussing their financial requests. I plan to use my Agricultural Business Management degree to help manage my farm and rely on my knowledge to make the best informed decisions about my business and my customers. By majoring in Agriculture Business Management I plan to help encourage more farmers to start their own farms or even expand their farming operation. I would assist them in making financial decisions based on their credit, character, capital, capacity, conditions, and collateral. I would make the best informed decisions about my clients that would benefit us both in the long run. I believe that by getting to know your clients and researching them thoroughly that we can support those farmers in need of loans and find the very best clients that have excellent character and credit. I hope to not only work as an Agricultural Loan Officer but also be a part time beef and crop farmer on the side. I plan to use my Agricultural Business Management degree to help manage my farm and rely on my knowledge to make the best informed decisions about my business and my
As an undergraduate student majoring in General Agriculture at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, I have an extreme interest in the USDA/ 1890 National Scholarship Program. The United States Department of Agriculture has been the catalyst for assisting minorities to obtaining employment in addition to inspiring young professionals. The USDA/ 1890 Program will not only help me financially but also open doors for my future. Financially, college is very expensive especially out of state. Economically, the funding that has been provided to me is not enough to receive my degree. FASFA doesn’t cover all of my financially need which means that another source of funding is needed for me to further my education.
By the late 1800s, America was transitioning from an economy based on agriculture to one based on industry. Although this transformation made the United Stated richer and more powerful than it had ever been before, it caused farmers to face numerous problems to which they found themselves unable to successfully overcome. Even though many farmers moved into the industrial workforce, the ones who wished to continue agricultural work faced problems such as overproduction and tariff policies. Also, the farmers lost their political power due to the decreased focus on agriculture.
The National FFA Organization (The Future Farmers of America) is not only for farmers anymore. It used to be only for farmers to help improve their crops and livestock. Now they opened it up to anyone who wants to improve themselves and their talents. The organization has turned into a community who rely on each other and help each other. Anyone who joins FFA will benefit Anyone who joins FFA will benefit because as a member students acquire skills such as responsibility, leadership, and teamwork.
As a person that has grown most of my own food, without chemicals or engine powered equipment, for the last 15 years and lesser so for many more years I can relate to some degree what it may have been like for a farmer in the 1800’s (I even live in a house built in 1850).
America — a land known for its ideals of freedom and new opportunities, a nation built under the idea that every man and women is created equal. However, the definition of what makes a person an American is entirely different from what it is that makes up America, itself. J.Hector St. John Crevecoeur, author of Letters from an American Farmer (1782), exposes what he believes makes an American. However, when compared to the standards of what makes an American in today’s world, it seems that becoming an American then was much simpler then, than it is today. The definition of an American is always evolving due to the influences of our changing nation. During a simpler time, Crevecoeur defined an American as someone of European
There are numerous ethnographic surrealist films that have an intriguing relationship to aesthetics and politics. A film that exemplifies this relationship is “Las Hurdes: Tierra Sin Pan” (Land Without Bread). This film is only 27-minutes and is directed by the infamous Luis Bunuel in 1933. Bunuel was a Spanish filmmaker of the 1920’s to the 1970’s. He is often attributed to being one of the major contributors to the surrealist movement of the 1920’s. “Ethnographic surrealism is a utopian construct, a statement at once about past and future possibilities for cultural analysis.”(Clifford, 119) ‘Land Without Bread’ has a clear connection between politics and aesthetics. It uses many techniques, specifically
Receiving the Klemmer & Associates Mustard Seed Scholarship will equip me to use the skills I have learned over the last twenty years to use i a very impactful and powerful way.
From 1880-1906, western farmers were affected by multiple issues that they saw as threats to their way of life. The main threats to the farmers were railroads, trusts, and the government, because these institutions all had the power to drastically affect the ability of the farmers to make profits. Therefore, the farmers were not wrong to feel frustration toward those institutions when the institutions caused the farmers to live lives of increasingly extreme poverty.
As the population of the young United States increased more and more people hungry mouths were asking for food. Farmers had to keep up with new technology but there were also many setbacks in government policy and economic conditions. In the period of 1865-1900, there were many ways in which technology, government policy, and economic conditions changed early American agriculture.
9. A college such as The University of Illinois could provide farmers with the knowledge of new technology that could give them better crops for possibly less cost and a way to limit production. Additionally, it could teach farmers how to respond to new market
From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be a self-employed grain farmer. However, when I was choosing my major I had to decide which one would help me efficiently grow the highest yielding crops. Therefore, I chose to major in Agricultural and Consumer Economics with a concentration in Farm Management and a minor in Crop and Soil Management. I found this degree practical, since I would learn how to keep myself financially stable and find efficient ways to raise crops in my operation with my newly acquired financial concepts. Minoring in crops will help me to be a highly productive producer.
One of the main reasons, that I want to live on a farm is the fact that I love animals and taking care of them. I love them as much as my puppy loves to go on runs! Ever since I was little, I have always gotten along with a variety of animals. Whenever I am in the company of animals, my day immediately brightens up. My favorite type of animals are farm animals, more specifically, horses. I love horseback riding, so I would be very close to something I love doing and am very experienced in if I were to own my own farm. I also plan to become a vet, so I could give my animals the care they need
Ever since I was a kid growing up in a farming environment, I have always had a passion for agriculture. Some of my fondest childhood memories originate from time and experience on the family farm. From helping my Dad bottle feed calves, to riding in the combine with my Grandpa, I loved it all. Throughout the years, I have always seen myself with a future in the ag industry. It is what I have grown up around, and it is what I enjoy doing. Although we no longer have the family farm due to unforeseen circumstances, I am still involved in the industry. My main position with my current employer is as the cattle manager, and I absolutely love every minute of it. Some of my duties include overseeing overall herd health, making breeding decisions,
Due to changes in the agricultural community there was in early nineteenth century East Anglia a significant situation of underemployment within the agricultural labourers’ community. At this time it was also being recognised that there was an ever increasing growth in population; for instance: ‘several landowners and journalists attributed the problems of rural society to the size of the labourers’ families and to their tendency to marry at an early age.’ It has been suggested that the average size of the agricultural labourers’ household was 4.9. This population rise in turn put pressure on the supply of housing, resulting in many agricultural labouring families living in small, squalid and overcrowded cottages, many consisting of just one room, with no ceiling, just the bare roof tiles and a clay floor. The building itself would have been constructed from unbound stone or wattle and mud. It can be suggested that:
California holds a leading position in agriculture in the United States (Mills correlation). Hence, being the leader in such area relies on utilizing pesticides in large amounts. The utilization of pesticides is meant to protect the crops from insects, fungi and other factors that can affect the harvest. However, the utilization of these can result in negative effects not only for the environment, but also for the persons working in agriculture – the farmworkers. Some studies have shown that there is a correlation between cancer incidence in
