In Dave Egger’s article “Serve or Fail’ he explains how college students should be required to volunteer for public service. Dave Egger’s describes how many college students spend most of their time doing things that aren't necessary such as “ maybe they're in their rooms, painting their toenails black with a Q-tip and shoe polish.”(180) I do not agree with Dave Egger’s that students should do community service hours because they are several reasons why they won't be able to. Many college students have families to take care of, jobs they have to work in order to pay off bills or attend school classes and etc. For most, not all college students have time to volunteer to do community hours because they have jobs to attend or families to take
Many schools require students to participate in community service, but I think this is a good idea. Many schools do not require students to volunteer in community service. I agree that students should have to volunteer to graduate. I think that students should be forced to volunteer for community service sometime in their high school career as it makes people work and shows them what work really is. It also gets people off there lazy tail.
Forcing students to volunteer can make their community service hours falsified. This is because it was not necessarily their choice to go out and help the community. Yet, since the students are required to do so they will more than likely record their required community service on their resume, as if it was something that they chose to do. This can be a
In "Serve or Fail," Dave Eggers argues that college should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation. Eggers gives us some purpose of college education to link with volunteering that help students getting beneficial effects. He gave some good points in terms of helping others out. He explains that college is too short to sit back and become the best foosball player and waste your time with no commitments to any after school obligations, etc. I think that everyone should be able to give some of their time to volunteer and put a smile on someone's face because they think that you care. I find Dave Eggers writing “Serve or Fail” very persuasive for the following reasons.
They see the teachable skills it provides, as Dodge listed, “... learn how to juggle responsibilities. The ability to multitask… the value of responsibility and discipline,” that this work allows students to learn. These lessons and skills may be learned by students as they participate in the work they’ve taken part in but do they really learn them fully? Though it may be true that students can learn valuable lessons from community service and volunteer work, the gain is almost fully lost when it becomes a necessity as it becomes more about getting the hours than putting in the work. “Many students don’t feel inspired by their time serving the community so much as irritated that they were forced to do so by the school system…” wrote Koenig. This states that because the work became a forced action, the students are more likely to brush it off than truly take in a reap the benefits of their work. When the work gets brushed off, it loses its value greatly and even almost completely. Just because students can gain from service, doesn’t mean that they will take the gains in and grow from the experience. In fact, students are more likely to benefit from things like community service when it’s their choice to
Community service is a good way to help people in need, but if it is required you are not doing it for the right reasons. Students may not ever want to help people after they graduate because they will fell like its only something they do for school and they already got credit and graduated so why should they keep doing it. Students could volunteer if they want to help someone but if they are forced to do the work they may not be much of a help. They may do a bad job or be rude because they do not want to do it, they might have other things they have to get done.
Students should not be required to complete 100 hours of community service to graduate high school for many reasons. Some of which include the lack of extra free time, inability to go somewhere, and the potential to have a higher dropout rate.
When applying for a position at a job, managers always check to see how much experience you have in order to check if you are qualified. When filling out a college application there are always questions that ask to write down any extra curricular activities you participated in or any clubs/service work you did and for how long. It is important to be a part of the community and to be dedicated to one or two locations for a certain amount of time to show commitment and effort. A student that has been a part of an organization for about three months and has not missed will be prefered at a college than a student that goes five times a month. Community service does not only help build relationships but allows students to spend their time learning new skills and it will benefit them in the future. Community service for high school seniors should be mandatory because it will teach the students how to be responsible, allow them to explore in depth something related to their career and improve their communication skills.
Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.
Is graduating a goal for you? To be the first one to graduate in your family? It’s like as if you’re almost there, just one more step but you need one more requirement to be eligible. In this article “Pro/Con: Should Student Service Learning Hours Be Mandatory?” By Claire Koeing, it states the opinion of why high school students should and shouldn’t do community service as a requirement to graduate high school. Many have their own opinion of why it is and isn’t important to have community service as a requirement. High school students mainly seniors already have so much stress and to do, but this does prepare them and give them a taste of how it will be after graduation.
He then goes on to explain that community service can have a profound effect on college students and help them to find potential careers. So then what about the students that don’t waste their time in college playing football and already have a good idea of what they want their potential career to be? The hours that Eggers
Community service is not required in most colleges or universities. Volunteer work is a great way to help out the community, but many students already have a lot on their plates if they want to graduate on time. Many students do not have enough time due to the countless hours doing excessive school work. Many colleges give students enough requirements in order to graduate, and requiring students to do 50 hours of volunteer work is pushing it. Many students have lives outside of school that comes first. Some students have jobs that take up most of their time before or after school, which gives them not enough time to do their school work. Some students have families at home that are more important. Some students are in clubs and sports. Requiring students to serve would just take away from their achievements in other areas. A lot of time is taken away from them because of extra requirements. Louisiana College should not require 50 hours of community service in order for students to graduate.
“‘The Logic of Mandatory Volunteerism”, by Stewart Ains, is an intriguing piece regarding the assertion that community service should be a requirement for graduation from high school. There are a multitude of arguments fighting this claim, but as a high school student who has to complete this task, I have strong feelings about why it is significant. If community service was not required by high schools, a vast number of students who attend that school would never have the opportunity to do something to give back. Completing community service can also benefit a student on his or her college applications and can help when deciding what one is passionate about. Accomplishing something for the community can teach a great deal of life lessons,
In “Serve or Fail,” Dave Eggers dissatisfies the phenomenon that although college students have too much leisure, they are not willing to give a few hours doing community services. Eggers suggests that colleges should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation, and colleges are best-poised to create in their students a lifelong commitment to volunteering. He pointed out that there are even
All in all, requiring students to do 75 hours of community service is a bad idea. Not only does it cut into personal time such as football practice to studying for a big test, it pushes students to do too much at one time. Also. not being able to have that free time after school prevents the student from being able to hold a good job since he/she would only be able to work around two to three hours a
In my five years of active volunteer work with multiple non-profit organizations, I have seen firsthand the lack of attendance of my peers in times of great community need and support from its members. Although it has become more complicated to find time to give back to the community, with a full-time school and work schedule, there is always spare time to give back. The rapidly growing demand for volunteers in communities all across America is increasing and it is everyone’s duty, especially college students, to pay their dues to the
