David Shoemaker provides two theories of egoism in the text--psychological theory and ethical theory. Psychological egoism is the claim that all actions are done solely for the sake of one’s own self-interest. Ethical egoism simply states that all actions ought to be done for the sake of one’s own self interests. Shoemaker elaborates stating ethical egoism is the more attractive theory.

According to Shoemaker psychological egoism fails due to the “is/out fallacy.” He states that just because something is doesn’t mean that is how it ought to be. He is using this to help separate the two theories while some people believe they build upon each other. He states that, just because something is a certain way, it doesn’t mean that we should act that way. The psychological theory states that you will act in your own self-interest. For this reason Shoemaker believes psychological egoism is false because we will not always act in our own best interest, but we ought to act in our own best interests. …show more content…

He uses the example of Marsha rigging the school election. Marsha wants to win the school election because it will help her to get into her favored college. She plans to rig the election to ensure this will happen. Jan is tired of Marsha always being in the spot light for being the more honorable child and wants to gain this attention. Jan plans to expose Marsha for her act because this will help Jan to achieve her goal. Because of the general moral principle that you ought not to prevent someone from doing what they ought to do, this would contradict its self because Marsha can’t both expose Marsha for rigging the election and also not expose herself. Shoemaker rebuts this by stating that per ethical egoism, one would only follow the moral principle if it coincides with one’s own long term
