Dr. David Takayoshi Suzuki is a male award winning scientist, environmentalist and famous broadcaster. He has been known all around the world since the late 1960s as a popular scientist and a studier of ecological issues. David is renowned for his radio and television program, explaining the complexities of the natural science in a very simple format that is easy to understand. He has written more than thirty books, countless articles and is the host on multiple television shows. David was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. After World War II he moved and grew up in London, Ontario. In 1958, he graduated from Amherst College (Massachusetts) with Honours in biology, followed by a Ph.D. in Zoology in 1961 from the University of Chicago.
His education was astounding. While he was in high school he was considered the class clown and made C averages. After high school graduating Penncrest High School in 1962, he joined the United States Navy. He served a four year term in the Navy before continuing his education. He went on to attend Harvard medical school graduating in 1961 with his M.D. Dr. Benson went in to practice but followed his love for research and was part of many ground breaking research studies in what would be referred to as the PNI field later.
David Suzuki was called to be a steward of the earth at a very young age citing his time spent exploring his local swamp as a child as sparking his passion. Suzuki followed this by attending the university of amhurst for a bachelor of biology and a phd in zoology from the university of chicago. However he was not content to stay in the realm of academia, he knew it was his calling to share his knowledge with the public. He did this most notably through his television show The Nature of Things. In this show he shared environmental theories and explained the how humans and their actions impacted nature in a way that was accessible for the Canadian public. At the time the ideas of environmentalism and it’s scientific theories had been limited to academe causing Suzuki to receive criticism with many scholars calling his media work a waste of his talents (Philipson & Bailey, 2011).
