I, Dawn Luong, am a current sophomore attending Berea Midpark High School and would like to participate in the Project SEED Summer Research Internship Program at Case Western Reserve University. Throughout my school career, I have gravitated more and more towards STEM related fields. After taking chemistry this year, as well as shadowing a chemical engineer at Lubrizol, I find that chemistry is something that I enjoy immensley. My first career goal is to major in chemistry or chemical engineering. In my chemistry labs, I have researched ion identification, quantitative analysis, the heat treating of steel, and found the percent composition of elements in compounds. In my engineering class, I created fuel cell cars, built simple machines and
I’m interested in attending USNA Summer STEM because I have a strong interest in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. I plan on attending the United States Naval Academy and graduate as a Nuclear Reactor Engineer and serve my country for life. I have made strong connections with the staff at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and want to make great connections with the staff, cadets, and shipmates I’d be working alongside with at the academy. I hope to serve my country with Honor, Courage, and Commitment in the STEM field of the U.S. Navy.
Until about 2 years ago I was not quite sure what path I would choose for my future career, let alone what path I would choose when I arrived at college. I tended to be adept at subjects such as science and mathematics throughout my high school life, however I was never particularly fond of any one subject in particular. However, that changed my senior year of high school when I enrolled in AP Chemistry. I was intrigued by chemistry when I attended the pre-AP Chemistry course, however I was not particularly interested at that moment. However, AP Chemistry came with a plethora of hands-on experiments and procedures that existed to illustrate basic concepts of chemistry. Although it may sound mundane, I was amazed at some of the concepts we learned being implemented in front of our eyes, and I was especially

I believe that The Helix Summer Science Institute is not solely an enriching academic experience, but also a social engagement opportunity. I believe that I would make an excellent student at the Helix Summer Science Institute 2016 because, by enhancing my understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of science, I would be able to integrate this knowledge into my life. This academically rigorous program presents me with the opportunity to acquire methodical, logical and practical skills that are applicable to the real world. I am a very studious, motivated and passionate student, who perseveres in the face of adversity, while always respecting my peers. I embrace diversity, and believe that success is achieved through collaboration. I have a passion for science and public outreach, and I believe that these interests are connected.
More than 2,000 qualified young adults apply to participate in the annual Naval Academy Summer Seminar but only 850 of said applicants are selected to participate in each of the sessions. Knowing that the summer seminar deals with STEM and the Navy, I quickly applied myself so I can be one of those 850 selected young adults and participate in a science, technology, engineering, and math-loving atmosphere. I am interested in attending the Naval Academy Summer Stem program because I live and breathe science and engineering. I want to continue my path to higher education through the Naval Academy one day.
I have been interested in Technology and certain aspects of Science since I was a child. As I became older I came to a realization of how much I love Technology; I began to excel in my technology and engineering classes but not do as great in my science classes. I began to loathe science as I took upon the love of Engineering. As I have researched different types of engineering in previous years, I have stumbled across Agricultural and Environmental Engineering. I have decided instead of seeing science a challenge I cannot overcome I should work harder to be better at the subject. Therefore, I can combine my love for the planet and horticulture with my love for technology and engineering. Having an internship at USDA as a Senior will further help me achieve my goal of having a career in the STEM field. I feel having an Internship my senior year will cause me to further succeed as the research I will hopefully be doing can cause me to grasp a better understanding of the different types of careers open to me in the future.
More specifically, I would like to participate in the Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Research Group. William Kelly’s work in biochemical engineering especially fascinates me, and I would love to get involved in his research on the optimization of CHO cell culture. I intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and the information I would learn working in this program would help further me in my career.
Changing the perspective from character to character would definitely have an impact on the story. If the main characters were changed every single book would differ significantly. For instance, in 1925 auto-biography titled Mein Kampf the world is flipped on its head. Adolf Hitler is the protagonist and the world through his eyes are much different than ours.
Summer Programs Help Prepare Minority Students for College STEM, Laura Perez, CHEM 1305, August 08, 2016
Throughout high school, I challenged myself by taking Advanced Placement math and science courses, such as chemistry, physics, and calculus. These classes jump started my interest in pursuing a STEM related career. I also had the opportunity to take an Introduction into Engineering and an Engineering
Before I came to the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, my world was small. I had never been exposed to the multiple STEM opportunities such as science fair, research, or university professors. I realized how fortunate I was to have such resources, and want to expose more young students to them. There are many underprivileged students in Denton ISD who don’t have access to STEM programs. I helped bridge this gap of educational opportunity by becoming a mentor for Aspire Mentorship, a program that promotes research among younger students to inspire them in the STEM fields. I mentored two middle school girls, a 7th and an 8th grader, through a research project from brainstorming ideas to conducting data analysis to their final presentation at the Fort Worth Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Out of all of the skin care products in the world, your bathroom cabinet needs to be filled with products researched and designed by me. When I entered high school, I discovered my passion for selecting lip sticks, lip glosses, lotions, perfumes, and makeup foundations. You name it. After learning about the connections between the information in my chemistry class and these items, a light bulb went off! I maintained an A average in chemistry throughout the whole year! Additionally, in 2014, I became a student in the Academy of Engineering and Technology, which also heightened my interests in chemistry. In a science fair at that academy, there was a chemistry course where we made colorful slime, and during that process, I learned that I get an adrenaline rush when I am mixing different chemicals together to see what the outcome is. Majoring in chemistry at Norfolk State University will definitely prepare me for a very successful future in chemistry! My ultimate goal is to conduct research and development for chemical cosmetics. I plan to obtain employment at the greatest companies in the world such as L'Oréal and Avon.
