Day 562: A Short Story

Ray Karner was a 35 year old man who shovels dead bodies into furnaces. He was the type of person who loved memories. Anything he thought was meaningful, he immediately jotted down in his diary. He had a daughter and a wife who he loved dearly. Many memories of them took up about half of his small pocket book. One after another, great days would pass by. But later he soon came to realize that things don’t always seem the way you want them to be. Day 430 Some commosion has gone on around the town. I see that the Nazis have put their flag up. Peace? It’s a sign of peace. I don’t really know what’s going on but I have a feeling it’s not going to be so great. It’s pretty sad. I just keep thinking what did they do to my wife and daughter? Shoot them, burn them, I don’t want to think about it. So many people lost their mothers, fathers, friends sisters. I wish life got better. He was missing his family for sure and he was really starting to build up the courage to get up and go. After seeing that boy really got him. He didn’t get to finish off doing what he wanted to do, just like his family. He was waiting a couple more days deciding on what he should do, he made up his mind. He was going to finally walk out. Not give a care about continuing his job. He knew he was most likely going to get caught. He wanted to meet other people in the camp and and not be stuck shoveling bodies. Day 565 I’ll do it. I’ll do it for my family. I want to meet new people, see new things. I’m going to head out tonight after they give me my last round of bodies. I’m going to have to wait a bit so i’m not caught on the spot. This is for sure, going to be exciting. Since they picked me to do this job I have no time to really get to know people. I know one of my school friends may be around here somewhere, but I do I know he’s not already dead. You know sometimes these bodies have sat outside so long, or have simply changed or because what they eat I can hardly recognize anyone
