Because my education depends greatly on the MAP grant and other financial aid assistance, I was certainly not hesitant to participate in Lobby Day, an all-day event that takes place inside the capitol at Springfield, IL. Often referred to as “Student Day,” this event allows students from all three U of I campuses—UIC, UIUC, and UIS—to travel to the capitol to lobby and advocate for a budget and funding for the MAP grant. Because this event primarily uses lobbying as their main strategy, many students were actually able to speak and lobby to the senators and representatives of their own districts. Unfortunately, because Lobby Day took place on March 2nd, a day where most of our congressmen and women were scheduled to vote for a budget bill,

In 1962 north of Boston, a town five minutes from a beach with a big summer colony out on the point sat a store in the middle of town. A&P was a local grocery store. On a Thursday afternoon, three girls wearing nothing but bathing suits walked into A&P and initiated a slew of comments, stares and actions taken by the cashiers and other patrons in the store. Most women in the town that had gone to beach would put on a shirt or shorts before getting out of the car and into the street. When the three girls in their bathing suits walked into the store, they had no idea of the events taking place as they walk around the store. Sammy watched the girl’s every move carefully and when the girls asked old McMahon a question, old McMahon was patting his mouth and looking after the girls, sizing their joints. In the story when Sammy says ‘old’ McMahon looking after the girls, it proves that the girls may have been underdressed for a local grocery store. Sammy’s behavior and actions that he took towards his manager was nothing more than an overreaction.

The definition of freedom, according to Dictionary.com, is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. In the declaration of independence, American citizens are given freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to vote, right to a fair trial, and freedom of assembly to name a few. These rights that we have enable us to form communities and have our voices heard regarding issues that negatively impact us as a whole or prevent us from moving towards a brighter and hopeful future because that is what freedom is. It is about hope. It is about being your own person without hesitation, without judgement. “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin and “A&P” written by John Updike encounter two very
Dawn met with her supervisor Fran and was informed that there were not any policies in place at Day One in regards to the following: Self-disclosure by coworkers, Dual relationships, or accepting gifts from clients. She felt very surprised that there were no policies. However, this intern realizes she must use her common sense and not indulge in sharing her personal information, such as relationships, family, personal goals, hobbies, etc. with clients and/or coworkers involved with Day One.
2.In order to address Dee's vulnerability to situations in which she believes she may be especially vulnerable to problematic beliefs and thought patterns, I would ask her a coping question. I would ask Dee, “What are the positive sources of support you have in your life?”. After receiving Dee's answer to this question, I would suggest to her that she utilizes these sources of support when she feels vulnerable. I would also emphasize to her that these sources of support will help her overcome the stress of dealing with her challenge. I would than ask Dee, “What are some coping mechanisms for you when you are stressed?”. This will help her understand what are her own kinds of best self-care techniques. -
