DC vs Marvel There’s an age old battle amongst us “nerds” over who is better in the comic book world, DC Comics or Marvel Comics? Everyone has their own opinions on who has the better stories and characters, and which comes out with the better movies and shows, but when you break it down each one has different qualities that make it better. Marvel and DC are the most well-known comic creators in the world. These companies kick-started the superhero/supervillain franchise. Marvel comics was founded in October 1939 Timely Comics, by Martin Goodman. The first comic published by Marvel included the first appearance of the Human Torch and Namor the Sub-Mariner (“Marvel Comics”). If you were to compare Tony Stark to Bruce Wayne again, they are similar in the way that they are both billionaire geniuses who use their money to fight crime. Their background stories are a little different, because of Bruce’s tragic upbringing after his parents were murdered. There are many comic book characters who become the hero they are because of a tragedy, like Spider Man and the death of Uncle Ben. Some heroes are a little different such as the Green Lanterns, they usually don’t have this devastating past; they are given a ring if they are found worthy, or Thor, who was born a God. The theme of darkness vs light that shadows DC and Marvel usually follows them into the cinematic universes. It’s the reason that Marvel tends to do better in the box office overall, because parents are more willing to bring their child to see the Avengers than they are to see Batman. The Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) brings in a lot more elements of lighthearted humor that makes the movies family friendly, compared to the DC cinematic universe (DCU) which has those dark elements from the comics brought to life. Both movie franchises try and stay in the PG-13. The release of Deadpool changed a lot by being the first successful rated R comic book movie.
