It chronicles a man's experience using two cochlear implants, which are devices implanted in the brain and used to stimulate the cochlea to give the wearer a better sense of sound. By using audio along with the mini-movie, viewers are given a glimpse into his sound world. When he first connects his implants, they initially screech and buzz which turns to the slowly clearing sound of a dripping faucet and the music he has playing. In the movie they show many people who share their stories of oppression due to the fact that they are either deaf or hard of hearing. They discuss that they don't want to be seen as people who need help or want sympathy because being deaf is not a disability. In the movie they state just some of the misconceptions that people have of deaf people. One being that they can’t do the same jobs as hearing people because its hard for them and theyre going to need assistance; that is not true; it’s sad that people believe that just because they can’t hear that they’re anything less than intelligent in a certain field.

Last week I had a chance to watch "See What I Mean" and this video gave me a humorous and enlightening look at the differences between them. In this movie "See What I Mean", issues such as attitudes toward time, taking time to say goodbye, complain about the use of phones and pagers, sharing information, giving and receiving criticism, and comments on personal appearance are explored and humorously discussed from the point of view of both cultures.

In Mark Drolsbaugh’s book, Deaf Again, he is able to bring the reader through his life struggles and triumphs as a member of the Deaf community. There were three major themes that reoccurred throughout his life. These themes consist of communication barriers, a negative image on deafness, and limitations on social experiences. An example of communication barriers starts in the beginning with his birth. From the beginning, he talked about how his parents struggled to communicate with the doctors when the epidural was not administered properly or when the anesthesia machine was not working. This communication barrier caused his mother to go through a natural birth and almost lose her life because she could not tell the doctors that something was wrong. Under the circumstances that Drolsbaugh’s grandparents did whatever they could to preserve his hearing this left him with feelings that deafness is bad. This notion fostered a negative self-image. Due to Drolsbaugh’s loss of hearing he had a hard time making meaningful social connections. This affected him greatly in his dating life. As he talked about in the book he dated a girl who was hearing but could sign for three years until they broke up. He said how he tried to hold onto that relationship because he knew that there are not many girls that he knew at the time that could sign and be able to communicate with him fully. This affected him socially with friends as well.
While watching the PBS documentary called Through Deaf Eyes, the part that interested me the most was the deaf schools. Deaf Schools now range all around the United States. They are interesting to me because they are different than a public or private school you see everyday. They also interest me because I would like to know more about them than what the video talks about. The three topics that interested me the most about deaf schools was how they started, how today's deaf schools are, and what is different about deaf schools.
“Through Deaf Eyes” was a documentary that really opened my eyes and allowed me to understand just a small fraction of what it may be like for a Deaf person to live in a hearing world. The first thing that really stuck with me was the fact that the film was all silent. The part that made it easy for me to understand was the fact that there was closed captioning. All throughout the film, all participants, both Deaf and hearing, were signing at what seemed like lightning speed. If it were not for the closed captioning, there was no way I would be able to catch up and really engage in the film. Then it hit me: this must be how Deaf people feel if the situation was reversed. They movie provided a very balance views on scientific research, culture norms, and major issues. They showcased the most common hearing parents concerns in raising a deaf child. They explain that many parents feel a sense of loss of a child when finding out the child is deaf because their image of the child future path is destroyed. Many hearing parents also very a limited knowledge of ASL and the deaf culture which makes it even harder for the parents to adapt. They also pointed out that many parents indicated that the ability to speak is more important than any other ability the child can have which indicated a belief system that is not beneficial for a child who is deaf.

This book was mainly focused on looking at Deaf culture of today and comparing it to the culture of the past, and what kinds of struggles deaf people had to endure to get where they are today. The two authors of this book are deaf; one was deaf her whole life and the other became deaf as a child. In my opinion, that was a major contributing factor to why it was so interesting. I feel like the film SOUND, AND FURY is a fascinating film which looks at the often overlooked deaf culture in contemporary society. By following two families, the film looks at how the societal pressures and the impacts of the cochlear implant have on deaf families, and deaf culture. For years, deaf individuals have been told they are less than or different, and after years of stigmatization, and ill treatment many people have become part of deaf culture, which does not look at deafness as a disability, but rather a different way of life. For parents, the option of giving their deaf child a cognitive implant means that they would be able to hear, and thus, grow up communicating through auditory channels with the outside world. While for many parents, this seems like a gift, many families feel like it is shaming deaf culture, affirming beliefs that deafness is something to be ashamed of, and disconnect them from deaf culture. In the film, we see the Artinian family, who has family members over three generations in Long Island, New York, who have hearing exceptionalities.
