Parent’s Expectation for their Children Parents in the world are all different; they have different personalities, faces, and characteristics. Every humankinds are all unique, but there is one fact that society is in common, people do not want to fail, they want to succeed and that is why that they wish that their children to accomplish something, again that is the reason that all parents tell their kids to study and try to educate them properly. The short story Dear Brother reflects to this, the author Bernice Friesen describes the conflicts between kids and their parents very well like in modern days. In the future, he could be the only solace to their parents. Additionally, Sharlene never makes fun of him. She scoffs and belittles Greg every time, in other hand she always admires and respects him because he plays sports with her and he always does something smart “’Dennis doing okay?’ ’I guess.’ Greg shrugs. ‘He’s doing some research for one of his profs. Says it could turn into a summer job if he does it right.’ Dad sits back and smiles as if when Dennis does a good work it feels as good as a big meal in his belly” (Friesen 29). This quote reveals that Dennis is doing fantastic and he has plans, essential plans. Unlike Greg, he always satisfies his parents or maybe he is an astute person. She wants to travel Europe but she is afraid to tell her parents since they would be really disappointed and mad at her; however she still wants to go to university when she comes back from Europe. Most importantly, she tells herself to not become a person like Greg, since he dresses and acts really awful. Sharlene does not really have a plan yet, she just wants to go to Europe and learn a new language and other cultures, and she thinks “I’m waiting, to get out of here. It’s April and next year’s grade twelve, then it’s escape to the university of Alberta like my brothers, like dad wants. If I do what dad wants. I have these dreams of running off to Europe for a couple of years, being a nanny and learning a language or two” (Friensen 26). She determines that she has dream like everyone else. She is very enthusiastic and joyful, her brain could be in state of respite but she has hope because there is a lots time left for her to change her mind. She is still young, it is great to do whatever she wants when she is young because time goes
