Dear Rice Graduate Admission Committee, My name is Harsh Jay Patel and I wish to apply for the Subsurface Geosciences Professional Master’s Program (M.S.S.G.) at Rice University. I believe that my outstanding academic performance and broad research experience makes me a very good applicant for your program. I will be graduating from Texas A&M University in December 2014 with a major in civil engineering (geotechnical concentration) and dual minors in geology and geophysics. Throughout my undergraduate education, I have upheld a very high level of academic accomplishments while working as engineering teaching assistant and web application developer at my undergraduate institution. As an engineering undergraduate, I strive very hard to…show more content…
Under the guidance of Dr. Zenon Medina-Cetina, director of SGL, I did an extensive literature review and wrote a primary honors thesis on the geologic assessment of different drilling, completion, and stimulation methods in selected gas shale plays worldwide. This research experience made me realize a multi-disciplinary approach to different problems faced by the gas shale industry, and helped me broaden my knowledge of quantitative seismology applications in the gas shale industry. To realize my curiosity for geo-modeling even further, I did some practical work and wrote a secondary honors thesis on numerical modeling for the formation mechanism of microbial mats in Yellowstone National Park. For this research, I worked under the guidance of Dr. Michael Tice (geology and geophysics) and Mr. Jian Gong, and acted as an engineering liaison for the Geo-Surface Modeling Laboratory (GeoSML) to help the group with different numerical simulation techniques such as FDM, FEM, and path simulation. Fortunate for me, I had the opportunity to do a poster presentation of my research with GeoSML at the 2014 Annual Research Symposium hosted by the Burg-Hughes Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems. My research was greatly adored by the geoscientist community of the Burg-Hughes Center for its peculiar fusion of engineering, computer science, and geology. As a result, this summer I am working to present my research at the upcoming
