Literature is not only important to society, but is very important for each individual to read and understand. Literature can provide a way for people to learn more about what happened in the past and can even be a way for people to reduce stress in their lives. There are many different types of literature and each of them can be used for different reasons. You can use books to study specific topics, to relive the past, and to express yourself through writing. Literature can be written about the past, the future and even about present day society. Even if the book or novel is fiction, it still has some sort of theme that resembles a real world experience or problem. We need literature in our lives to help us develop and improve, not only as individuals, but as a society and to learn about the past.

Have you ever wondered why literature refers to history? Well, most literature is taken from prior history. Unless of course it is a fiction story, but even then there are still some historical facts involved in those stories. Literature portrays a lot of history. Without literature we probably would not know how the United States of America came to be, who helped it happen, or when it happened. As a citizen, those are very pertinent facts to know. Some literature that has to do with history would be the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Bill of Rights, Thomas Paine’s “Give Me Liberty” and a whole bunch more.

Howard Zinn makes a statement that is a powerful analogy regarding this, “I assume that history is not a well-ordered city (despite the neat stacks of the library) but a jungle… we who plunge into the jungle need to think about what we are doing, because there is somewhere we want to go” (Zinn). This quote represents that people thinking about their actions are required for a metaphorical, world peace and harmony. If those people think about their actions before they act upon them, then they will realize they might have a future before wrecking a historical time period. A prime example of history repeating past historical events is the Rwanda Genocide in respects to the Holocaust. The Holocaust developed as the Nazi’s killed Jewish people because they were the inferior race.

There are facts but there are also lies that hold truth. In history, there are facts we are certain of. But, in history, we do not learn about the human experience, there are gaps missing that only literature can fill. In literature, sometimes things are not real but there is truth behind the words. In works of literature such as Of Mice and Men, Things They Carried, Night, and Fences, events in those stories, or play may not have really happen but they tell a story and there is truth behind the story. The truth is in the way people were treated, in the way people thought and felt, in the way that people 100 years ago are just like people today.The stories told help us see the truth in history because it allows us to connect with it, with the people that are part of the history

This book displays how our futuristic world would be without all the books in the world being accessible to us. “You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture; just get people to stop reading them.” The destruction of books shows how the authoritative people are trying to manipulate their nation’s thoughts and the past. ‘We must all be alike. Not everyone born free and equal, as the constitution says. But everyone made equal… a book is a loaded gun in the house next door.” This quote from Beatty indicates that they do not want their people to know about history and they want everyone to see the same things, hear the same things, and do the same things. These characters all believed in living the same lives oblivious to the world before them.

You realize how easy it is to often forget that every single new idea, religion and war was a struggle that lasted generations upon generations. History is more than just a page or a story, its our account of the world. That goes to show how short life and history is, you realize that history is always repeating, war after war, peace then war. There are good and bad periods in history and its up to us to learn from them. Literature comes in all forms; its basically everything around us. Movies, books, newspaper, songs, posters, magazines, these are examples of literature. Like the many forms of literature, it also has many purposes; literature is used as a source of entertainment, it in forms people, and it also enlightens them with knowledge. Ever since we entered school, we have constantly been questioned, asked to reflect upon what we read and to analysis what we read, watch and see. All we have been doing since day one had been analysing literature. Don’t you think there must be a reason for all these years of analysing everything? I’ve finally come to the conclusion that all those years of analysing was to prove to us the power of literature. To some extent literature has the power to refute and/or reinforce our prejudice and bias. Literature is able to do this because it is able to open us to the different social and cultural standing around the world, we can always connect with literature, it comes in many forms and it’s composed of facts.

Literature is defined as written works published on a particular subject. Literature can also be viewed as witness, because it can be a source of proof based on the events it was written on. Literature as witness allows readers to get a deeper understanding of the issues that have happened based off of what the books are about. Those who read literary texts such as historical novels, memoirs and novels are witness to historical events. These texts can be viewed as witness because the events mentioned are based off of true life events. Some may argue historical fiction is not real and therefore could not be viewed as a reliable source. Now and days every person must take at least two years of history in order to pass high school. Many people, including myself, ask the question,“Why must we take history?” Well the answer many of us get is, “ So that history does not repeat itself.” The real question of the matter is, Does history repeat itself? History has repeated itself over and over again. An example of this would be the genocide that occurred in the Ottoman empire in 1915, nearly 88 years later another genocide has occurred in Darfur in 2003. These two events are both similar and different in ways, but none-the-less are proof that history does in deed repeat itself.
