Death Is A Bit Taboo

The idea of death is a bit taboo, however it is the unspoken reality of life. Naturally, there comes a time when you will no longer be a part of the ever-evolving world physically and it will be your time to die. The question that has arisen is whether or not an individual’s unbearable pain should constitute them to request death. A person should not have to be hooked up to machines in order to be kept alive, if that is not what they want; they should be able to choose death.
Perhaps when Patrick Henry stated, “Give me liberty or give me death” he was not referring to assisted suicide but the principles still remain the same. Our society was built on the principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; lying in a bed while incapacitated is not living, freedom or happiness. The idea of assisted suicide is to permanently end the suffering of an individual after every other opinion has been exhausted and it allows the patient to take control of their lives. When an individual becomes terminally ill many options regarding their health is placed in the doctor’s hands and the individual’s family’s hands, leaving the sick patient without control over their body and over their life. When the patient loses control regarding their healthcare and their health continues to decline without improvement, the thought of suicide rises because the individual wants to simply escape their pain and suffering.
