Debating History – Atomic Age Towards the end of World War II, the belief that Americans had of the war was one of invading Japan and ending the war in traditional style and in traditional surrender. However, to the efforts of J. Robert Oppenheimer and fellow associates changed the course of warfare and history by creating the atomic bomb.
The Manhattan Project The Manhattan project was a very key point in history that involved the production of the bomb and of course the plan on attacking Japan. When World War II started, J Robert Oppenheimer, who was a professor at the University of California, Berkley was the guy who oversaw the whole Manhattan project Plan. Now since the plan is now under guidance of Oppenheimer, he thought it would be a good idea to bring in more physic minds to work on the production of the atomic bomb. Edward Teller, Leo Szilard, Arthur Holly Compton were a few physicist that assisted Oppenheimer in the making of the atomic bomb. There were actually three bombs that were produced by the scientist. “On July 16, 1945, at 5:29:45 a.m., the Manhattan Project comes to an explosive end as the first atom bomb is successfully tested in Alamogordo, New Mexico.” Once the bomb was successfully tested, President Truman and his jointers of staff began to discuss a plan on what they should decide to do to end the war quickly as possible.
