There are numerous staff members that have distinctive Health and Safety parts to maintain in organisations like Debenhams. A portion of these roles are more high-ranking than others, for example, Directors, Line Managers and various employees that have unique roles to maintain, like the Fire Marshall and the First Aider. Their job is to simply make sure about the safety of the other employees that are working there and the customers. To begin with, the Fire Marshal has to comprehend what the role of his position is and he also needs to ensure that they know how the fire evacuation process works so that he can get the public to safety. His role as a Fire Marshal is very important since he will be taking everyone out to their safety, in the case of a fire outbreak. That being said, he has to know the (fire) safety procedure and have the capacity to get all the customers and employees alike to the fire exit points safely. It is essential for business like Debenhams to have a fire marshal so that they can guarantee the safety of not only their workers, but also of their clients that they will be in there, so that they can feel safe knowing that they are safe in

Before I start work, I ensure that the environment is spacious to avoid any accidents. By ensuring that the floor is dry and clear of any obstruction or material that could result to risk of an accident to both the service user and member of staff in line with Health and Safety first Aids Regulations 1987. I carry out checks on the residential areas and on the surroundings, fire checks and parked the wheelchairs and Zimmer frames in their appropriate places to avoid any accidents. I ensure staff are kept safe within their day to day work by ensuring that they work to Health and Safety Law and Legislation and that this is kept up to date. I ensure risk assessments are in place and reviewed regularly for any changes or updates. I ensure staff are all treated equally and are given the same choices.

A good method of monitoring & improving are health, safety and security procedures are visually. Check visitors have signed in the visitor’s book, look for items blocking fire exits or hallways, wet signs are in place during cleaning, COSHH cupboards are kept locked, medication trolleys are secure, hoists are clean and stored in a correct storage place. Policies and procedures need to be reviewed regularly to ensure they are still relevant, circumstances in workplace can change and new risk assessments will need to be put in place or old ones reviewed. As an employer, you need to be aware of the processes and duties produced in these regulations and the practical implications imposed. There is also a duty to involve employees in all health and safety
It is important to recognise the different responsibilities and approaches of a member of staff, the employer and others in the work setting. For example the employer is responsible to provide PPE and relevant health and safety training free of charge. It is then the responsibility of a staff member to use the PPE and to attend the training. So although the responsibilities are different they are also related and both need to work in order to ensure a high standard of health and safety. The employer provides as safe working environment, however if an accident or incident occurs it requires the efforts of both staff and sometimes others to report this to ensure measures are put into place to reduce any risk associated with the incident or accident. Another example of how health and safety has a linked responsibility can be shown through a member of staff ensuring they provide the relevant fire safety information/instructions to others. It is then the responsibility for others to follow these instructions.

Everyone in my company must comply with the health and safety procedure. We have to go on mandatory training to complete our health and safety certificate. This includes manual handling and fire safety. We must make sure our work environment is a safe as we can make it. If any accidents do occur i have to report them to my office or to the out of hours office, I must also record all accidents in the communication book so that other carers know what has happened this includes the nature of the accident, treatment received and where and when it happened. If any health and safety rules or procedures are breached then this may become a disciplinary for care staff. My line manager will always advise all care staff on and health and safety concerns that we may have.
Under the Health & Safety at work Act I have many responsibilities as an employee. These responsibilities must be obeyed in order to maintain a safe working area and minimize any potential hazards or risks to yourself or others. Some of my responsibilities as an employee are as followed:
