The 56 men who signed The Declaration of Independence has no idea they were going to create one of the most influential documents in history. On July 4, 1776, men were brought together from the 13 colonies to sign The Declaration of Independence and to achieve freedom from Great Britain. NEED THESIS.

The first major reason the 13 colonies wanted independence from Great Britain was The Stamp Act of 1765. The act subjected the colonies to pay taxes on goods such as magazines, playing cards, newspapers, and many other types of papers used throughout the colonies. The principle of the tax was to help pay for the troops stationed in North America. The committee of the five meets up together several times to talk about ideas and organize. Jefferson then set out to write the rough draft of The Declaration of Independence, this took him two and a half weeks to complete. What made Jefferson memorable was that he used no books or pamphlets to help him write the document. Jefferson wrote that all men have rights including “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” he also said that colonies no longer were a part of England. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson’s arch rival was also an important advocate in The Declaration of Independence. Adams was a very active member in congress, being a part of 90 committees and chaired to 25 during the second continental congress. He was elected Vice President under George Washington in 1789 and then elected President in 1796. Adams was a very intelligent man being he attended Harvard College in 1751, becoming a lawyer, diplomat, statesman, political theorist, and a founding father. The British were not too fond of him and actually wanted him hanged. Altogether, these two men played an important role in writing and declaring independence for the 13
