It is a fact that boxing was one of the most favorite and preferred sports among the people of United States and they used to encourage boxers, so that they can perform with more enthusiasm and zeal. Gradually, people of America had taken a step back and diverted their choices towards other sports or games. In this regard, Bernick and Banks (2013) have proposed an idea that large number of factors was involved in this act. The rest of paper gives in-depth and accurate factors or causes, which were involved in the decline of American boxing industry.
Diminishing of Heavyweight Division
According to Silverman (2012), one of the major causes or factors, which were involved in the declining trends of boxing in America, is diminishing use of heavyweight division. It has been examined that one of the major aspects, which caused people of America to get engage in other sports is the stoppage of heavyweight division in boxing. This idea was supported by Bernick and Banks (2013), according to which, the citizens of America loved to experience knockouts, which were quite impossible without heavyweight divisions. With the passage of time, they lost their interest from boxing and found other interesting and eye catching sports, like football, cricket, hockey, etc. It is a fact that Ray Robinson was a middleweight, during his boxing era (Epstein, 2011). American writer Joyce Carol Oates is an expository writer that provides a successful informative piece about the dangers of boxing. This sport has been shadowed by events that influence athletes to prolong their careers with dangerous intuitions. In “The Cruelest Sport,” Oates implements exposition, narration, modes, and tone to effectively persuade her audience of the threats boxing impose.
The fact is that every fan wants to see action, not a couple guys dancing around. This is why the UFC is only interested in fighters who are willing to compete and put on a good show. Whether someone pays the money to watch an event in person, or watch an event on pay-per-view, they expect to see an actual competition. If all they see is two men dancing around trying to wear each other out, they are going to start losing interest in the sport. This is what is happening in boxing today. The question to be asked shouldn 't be if MMA is dominant over professional boxing. The question should be why boxing is still legal? The final facet of the two sports I want to discuss is safety. Both sports are sanctioned by an athletic commission that can approve, deny, revoke, or suspend all licenses for unarmed combat. The fight takes place with a referee in the ring, or the cage, with the fighters. Doctors are always on hand as well. These measures
In Joyce Carol Oates’, The Cruelest Sport, she argues that boxing is a cruel and savage sport and that it should not be practiced or even considered a sport. The title of this work The Cruelest sport leads to the questions: Why is it the cruelest sport? Is it because of the physical injuries? Or is it because of the corruption? Oates argues that because the ultimate goal of boxing is to injury someone, it is a barbaric sport. Boxing is the only sport where two men climb into a ring and fight each other like animals. Boxing is harmful because of the injuries, wounds, and deaths that occur during every fight. Victory is usually when one of the fighters is knocked out. Victory is usually achieved when one fighter is unconscious. Boxers fight
Millions of people worldwide take part as spectators to the sport of prize fighting: better known as boxing. In a 1962 essay entitled “Who Killed Benny Paret?” the author, Norman Cousins, writes about the dangers that come with the sport of boxing. He especially talks about a match that resulted in the death of a boxer named Benny Paret. Cousins argues that boxing is just a show of violence and that boxers put themselves in the ring just for the simple purpose of entertaining a crowd. Even though investigations reflect the role of the referee, Paret’s manager, and the doctor’s examinations as the main cause of Paret’s death, Cousins blames Paret’s death on the people that attends boxing matches to see a man get hurt or knockout because he
Boxing Should Not be Banned In recent years, there have been many campaigns to try and have boxing
Boxing, an official sanctioned sport in the early 20th century, is a sport that is known as one of the most violent and physically demanding sports on the earth. Professional boxers that get paid to fight must be in top shape in order to preform at the highest level. Being a professional boxer is a tough life. Boxers train hard for many months leading up to one fight and either win, lose, knock out the opponent or even get knocked out. The sport has been around for centuries, but has most recently taken off over the last 100 years. It is a multibillion dollar industry with fighters taking home hundreds of thousands of dollars if not even millions of dollars for big matches. In his novel Papa Jack, Roberts tells the story of the famous African American boxer Jack Johnson. He details the boxers rise to fame and fortune and his downward spiral that would soon follow. In Papa Jack, Roberts displays life of a professional boxer through firsthand accounts with events that happened during Johnson’s life and shows how boxing not only influenced his life but also how he influenced the African American community.
Boxing - a violent cage fight, or a crowd pleasing sport? Boxing is a high intensified sport that can be seen as helping the fighter in life or permanently damaging the fighters future. Many say that boxing is one of the safest sports; however, boxing can leave permanent brain damage from constant punches to the skull. The sport boxing is for managers to earn money while their fighter is in the ring fighting against another human until one gives up, or gets knocked out. A fight could be the end of one’s career, or even one’s life. Boxing should be banned because the money earned does not trump the risk of death, the mixed messages from fighters in the ring confuse the laws regarding assault, and the constant punches to and athletes head leaves permanent damage.
Ray Chapman is known as the only MLB player to die from an injury. He was hit by a pitch and eventually died in the club house (“One pitch” par. 1). Today, all MLB athletes are required to wear helmets when batting, to protect them from severe injuries. Sports in the 1920s were the start of a new concept. It was a new idea to people that changed a lot in society and their views on sports.
This essay will concentrate on looking at the ethnic and class divide within the sports subculture of American society, and how it reflects American Society as a whole. When examining any society there is a always a broad area to cover, while looking at America’s society I will be looking at the arguments that it is the ‘land of the free’ a ‘new nation’ which immigrants flocked to start a new life in a country of much ‘opportunity’. I will be using the sport in the 19th century to examine just how much America was a land of opportunity and of the free, and whether it differed from the attitudes in countries from around the rest of the world.
Boxing has been around since the early B.Cs, it does not have a creator but it does have people who made it into the sport it is today. Legends say that Apollo was the original maker of boxing and fighting, but that was obviously just a myth. Jack Brownton is among those people that shaped the sport to what is today by implementing the first set of rules in 1743. John did this and unintentionally created a successful sport which many people love and find entertaining. Boxing was created and known as a manly art of self-defense but then it grew into fighting for prize money, awards, and glory. In 1997, the injury rate predicted in the sport of boxing was 7,257 injuries and 10.8% of those injuries were estimated to have affected people between the ages of five and fourteen. 1.3% of those injuries were predicted to be in the ages between zero and four, and 55.8% of those injuries were in the group of ages from fifteen to twenty-four.( National Electronic Injury Surveillance System et al., Estimates for Sports Injuries 1997) Boxing can be a safe and fun sport as long as it is practiced and played properly. Boxing should not be banned because it can help relieve stress, and like running it is a good addition for getting in shape. It should also not be banned because boxers know the risks and they still choose to do it ; it is their

Boxing is not a dehumanating sport because it is legal to the government, others consider it poetry in motion and it captures a big part of the history. According to Jonn E. JaGozza, boxing is the science of mentally multi-tasking on several levels simultaneously and displaying skill in an overt, disciplined and aggressive manner. It is a combat sport in which two people engage in a contest of strength, speed, reflexes, endurance, and will, by throwing punches usually with gloved hands against each other. But for others, it is not just only a sport, but also an art that everyone could express through boxing. There are some evidences why boxing is considered legal, reasons why others express their feelings through boxing and consider it poetry in motion, and there can be more added knowledge in our history.
