In the article “The Numbers on Arming College Students Show Risks Outweigh Benefits” by Evan Defilippis and Devin Hughes, the authors speak on the controversy surrounding the law that now requires universities in several states to allow concealed firearms in campus. I came across this article on the LexisNexis Academic database, which is a great source for finding viewpoint articles from newspapers or magazines. In the article, Defilippis and Hughes argue that although campus-carry advocates testify to the benefits of guns on campus, according to statistics, the authorization of guns on campus has more risks than it does benefits.

Texas, along with several other states signed a bill allowing concealed carry of firearms on campus, believing “that mass murderers target gun-free zones, including colleges and universities that ban firearms on campus” (Defilippis & Hughes). Furthermore, it is stated that gun advocates not only believe that firearms could obviate massacres on campus but also prevent sexual assault. They begin by trying to refute the idea of the prevention of sexual assault due to concealed carry; they provide data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which reveals that “women almost never successfully fend off a would-be rapist with a firearm” (Defilippis & Hughes). Further data shows that since the passing of concealed carry legislation, in some states, the rate of rape increased, whereas nationwide assaults have been decreasing each year.
