When it comes to leadership there are many different way to go about defining it, saying that, there is no set definition of leadership. The problem of defining leadership can be seen from two different fundamental difficulties (15). The first notion is that leadership is a multifaceted concept that is subjective to interpretation, such as everyone has their own understanding of what leadership is based off of experience and learning (15). Which makes it very difficult to set a specific definition that everyone agrees upon. Leadership has been researched extensively but yet scholars are yet to find or compile an exact definition. As (Kent, Todd, 2004) explain there have been many efforts in defining leadership and several ideas have been compiled yet there is still a distinct discrepancy amongst scholars. Author Chelladurai breaks down leadership into three elements: "(1) leadership is a behavior process, (2) leadership is interpersonal in nature, and (3) leadership is aimed at influencing and motivating members toward group goals" (pg. 160). These are the ways he focuses leaderships and their intentions towards leading. Kent and Todd further discuss the importance of leadership and its distinct aspect to society and organizations, and that future successes are largely dependent upon it (2004). Another area in the domain of leadership styles is when (Zorn & Violanti 1993) define leadership as "patterns of behaviors, assumptions, attitudes, or traits exhibited by individuals in attempting to provide leadership" (pg. 70). Leadership is defined in many different ways by many different academics and professionals. A few words that resonate with the meaning include management, control, guidance, headship, direction and governance. My basic definition for the word describes it as a technique used to manage and guide individuals or groups of individuals in a specific direction to achieve a common goal. However this is a bit too basic for my liking. While conducting the research for this manifesto I found two definitions that I thought were more interesting and quite charming. Tom Landry defines leadership as “getting someone to do what they don’t want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve” (Murphy, 2010). Alternatively Otto Scharmer stated, “at its core, leadership is about shaping and shifting how individuals and groups attend and subsequently respond to a situation” (Scharmer, 2007).

There are over 40,000 books/writings and over 10,000 research studies on leadership (Adair, 2011). Even though there are a numerous amount of studies on the subject, there is still no real definition of the word. In the past 60 years, as many as 65 different classification systems have been developed to define the dimensions of leadership, (Northouse, 2013 p.4). The classifications have broken down into 4 components: 1) Leadership is a process, 2) Leadership involves influence, 3) leadership occurs in groups, and 4) leadership involves common goals.
Let us start by defining the term “leadership”. Is that even possible? Like art, leadership is subjective, and we can only define it when we see it. Sociologists and authors such as Rost, Burns, Bennis and Mintzberg have all argued that the actual study of leadership is flawed in that there have been numerous studies identifying it, but very few defining what it actually is. Again, we can only identify it, when we see it taking place.

Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam-Webster Dictionary leadership is the “office or position of a leader” (Miriam-Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is “the ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal.” Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. Leadership theories are implemented in order to help increase the organizations productivity. There is not one right leadership theory, it varies depending on the organization and what job need to be done. Most managers use a combination of multiple theories depending on the job at hand.
