Defining Me Although family can be defined by many definitions, I define family as, people, who may or may not be related to you, that support you, positively impact your life, and love you. Some of us may disagree on the definition of family, but I strongly believe that everyone agrees that family defines and shapes a person into who they are. The life experiences I have endured, the past with my father, the great relationship with my mother, and my passion for horses have all defined who I am as a person with core values, opinions, and hopes for the future.

Many times, he would pick us up drunk, then drive us back to his house, where we would then go straight to sleep, or we would make him angry. Other times, he would forget to pick us up altogether. My father had many faults, and although I was taught by my mother to be a forgiving, understanding person, I just couldn’t bare seeing someone who didn’t care about me or my feelings. Since the age of 14, and with little argument, I haven’t seen my father since. I have always felt a void, abandoned by my father, and I believe his absence has greatly influenced my life and values. However, I also believe that it has shaped me into the person I am today, and I am very proud of who I am. I started riding horses at the very young age of three, and ever since then, I have had a love and passion for horses. Riding horses was not only something that I was able to do with my mom, but it soon became an activity that allowed me to de-stress and forget about all of my worries. My mother and I would go to horse shows every single weekend, and soon horse shows turned into more competitive barrel races and rodeos. At these more competitive shows, I learned so much about myself and my horses. First, I learned that even the best of the best do not win all of the time, and they also hit barrels and have bad runs. Horses, especially young ones, are extremely humbling. They teach you that sometimes you can put in all of the hard work, and sometimes that isn’t enough when you are riding a 1000+ pound animal with a mind of its own. But, they push you to work harder and to be more determined than ever. Secondly, I learned to hold myself accountable for mistakes, instead of blaming someone else. In barrel racing, it is so easy to just blame the horse for the mistakes made, but I believe that if the run is analyzed, 90% of the problems are the rider. If the rider holds themselves accountable, the mistakes can be corrected quickly. Thirdly, I learned that no matter if I’m winning or losing, I love this sport, and I love to
