Defining Personal Responsibility and Exploring My Own Responsibilities

What is personal responsibility? Some examples people would probably come up with would be these: working, chores, taking care of your family and some might even say going to school and getting a better education. The definition of personal responsibility is: the obligation to carry forward an assigned task to a successful conclusion. With responsibility goes authority to direct and take the necessary action to ensure success. ("DOD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms"). Personal responsibility to me is taking ownership of the things that will affect us in anyway, whether it is in the long run or short term. I will take personal responsibility to the next level in my studies. I will make sure everything I can control in my realm will be completed to the best of my abilities. I will make sure my responsibilities don’t become ‘burdens’ or ‘assignments’. My responsibilities will be complete and because of the steps I have taken to choose my fate I will have the blessing of making my family’s life easier and I will be happier with my new sense of worth. Because of the direct connection going to college has with making more money and being a successful person we should all take ownership of our lives and get educated. According to Julian and Kominski (2011) “Occupation is often the mechanism by which education is related to earnings. Higher levels of education allow people access to more specialized jobs that are often associated with high pay. Degrees in many occupations are treated as job training that may be required for a position or earn the employee more pay within that position. (p.2.).” The way I see it, I have no choice. I will take ownership of my life and I will make a better living situation for my family.
In conducting the research for this essay I found various websites and papers people have written which all fell along the same lines of thinking about personal responsibility. It seemed that anyone who thinks about personal responsibility automatically begins to list their everyday duties:
