To the world today, a hero is someone distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility, or strength; but really, anyone can be a hero. A hero can vary from someone as well-known as George Washington to someone as unheard of as anyone’s very own mother. Someone who has done a good deed for someone else is hero. The biggest heroes are the ones in well-known books and plays, such as Odysseus from The Odyssey, or have made a huge difference in the history of this world, like Mahatma Gandhi. Siddhartha Gautama is a hero, but not in the same way Odysseus or Gandhi are. Although these three influential people went through different journeys in order to accomplish different things, they are all heroes in their own way and have been through the same …show more content…
At the conclusion of his journey, Odysseus is a better person, having conquered his own mental restraints, and he returns home to use his new self-understanding of being a better king, husband, father, and son. On the other hand, the journey of Siddhartha Gautama was spiritual, and he also met with several obstacles and crises. He had a family and had never seen the sickly, elderly, or dead before, and when he did, he immediately began to try to discover how to overcome suffering. The journey of Mahatma Gandhi was also spiritual. He was very faithful to God and his own country, even after facing so many troubles. He freed India from the British without the use of violence.
Odysseus faced several obstacles and went through many tests on his way home from the Trojan War. Odysseus’ first obstacle—the Island of the Cicones—was because of his greed. He stopped here to raid it for supplies, and him and his men looted a lot of goods and split it amongst themselves. In spite of this, they were greedy, which compelled them to stay in town and collect every last bit they can; however, the Cicones attacked on horseback and killed 72 of Odysseus’ men. From this obstacle, he learns not to be greedy in victory. One of his most difficult trials was when he encountered the Island of the Cyclopes. He and his men found a Cyclops’ cave; however, they were trapped inside of it by Polyphemus, the Cyclops. (Necessary??) Odysseus could not
If you look up the definition of hero what comes up is, "a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.", and then after that is the example, "a war hero", but that is highly debatable. Personally, I don't think there is an actual definition of hero because everyone has a different opinion on what they think a hero is. For example, I consider a hero is someone who is willing to risk their life for you, care about you, and puts you before them, but when asking a friend of mine what the definition of a hero is for them they simply said someone who saves lives. I personally think that's more of a general definition that describes people that are police officers, nurses, doctors,
Think about people who deserve status as heroes—from the past, from the present, from life, and from literature. What defines a hero? Write a multi-paragraph essay that develops your definition of heroism. Be sure to use strategies of definition (function, example, and negation) to guide your writing
Another idea of a hero was when Gandhi had stood up for his country; India. “Gandhi led nationwide campaigns to ease poverty, expand women's rights, and build religious and ethnic amity” plus he had “spent a number of years in jail in both South Africa and India”. In other words Gandhi never gave up showing everyone how India should be independent. Gandhi had stood out his way by leading marches to declare independence. Gandhi had been admired for his bravery (when he was thrown in jail a few times), his confidence (he never showed any sign of weakness) and perseverance (he had never gave up).
“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”. Harvey Dent believed these words he said in the closing scenes of Batman: The Dark Knight. This quote is said in a few words but has a meaning worth a thousand. It leaves the listener of the quote thinking what truly defines a hero from the villain in the world. It gives one the provocation of how they should live their life rather than how they do live their life.
Everyone has different opinions on what it means to be a hero and what it takes. The literal definition of a hero is “a person who is greatly admired” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary), and some people may agree with that. Others think that it takes more or different qualities to be a hero. Among these qualities are bravery, kindness, selflessness, determination, hope, and confidence. Those are just a few among many more traits. Qualities like those are found in many people, from the heroes written about in fiction, to the people who live in towns across the world. By saying this, it’s true that everyday people can be heroes, given the right time and place.
According to The Lincoln Writing Dictionary, a hero is a person who is admired by others for his or her excellent achievements or outstanding qualities. As mentioned by Webster’s New World Thesaurus, the expression hero refers to “brave,” “conqueror,” “victorious,” and “champion.” Such heroes possess “popular figure” and “courage.” The origin of the word hero comes from the Ancient Greek language usually defining what is considered superior and honorable. Typically the inclination to sacrifice themselves for what is best is the chief importance. In literature, it happens often that the hero suffers from disastrous flaws, leading to their downfall. These type of heroes are known as tragic heroes. The etymology of the word hero comes from the Greek work translating to “hero, warrior” one particular figure that come to mind when hearing the word, is Heracles because he has divine honors. Whereas the opposition to a hero, are terms such as “coward,” “slacker,” “weakling,” and “sneak.” A coward is one who is neither
Whoosh! I’m Superwoman. I’m a cancer survivor. I fought in World War II. These people all have overcome something or helped others. Probably one of these people is your hero. You chose a certain person or category of people to be your hero because you look up to them in a inspiring way. Everyone has their own personal hero. When I think of hero I think about their qualities. This person must have positive qualities and not any negative ones. A hero has a heart, with plenty of love. There are many more explanations of what a hero is.
What is a hero to you in your eyes? A hero to me in my eyes is someone like a soldier or a veteran who has sacrificed everything for us to keep us safe. A hero is also someone who has deep motivation to keep themselves and their family safe throughout the battle. A hero is someone who is brave, strong, kind, giving and caring. Heroes are people who always want to help with things and make sure things are good for people and themselves.
Heroes are not people in comic books or movies. Heroes are people who protect the innocent and punish the guilty. They are all around us, but we do not always recognize them. We do not appreciate the sacrifices they make in able to keep us safe. Look at police officers always taking time from their families, working to keep the rest of us out of harm’s way. There are military officers deployed to help other countries in need and help them fight their enemies. Due to these brave actions, we are a strong and independent country. Heroes must possess imperative qualities that define them as above average such as humbleness, courage, and tenacity
When asked what the definition of a hero is, you will get a myriad of answers. Many will tell you a sports player, a comic book character, or even the name of a person in their life that has made a difference to them, such as a parent or a teacher. This may be true for the person giving you their definition. In reality, there is no ‘real’ definition of a hero, as it is different for each of us.
A hero; in my opinion is selfless, what they do is not for them but to help others. When I think of heroes I’ve always thought of the brave men and women who serve and have served in harms way to protect this country. Maybe call me old fashioned but any man welling to put his life on the line for people he loves that’s what I consider a hero. A true hero never calls himself a hero, he doesn’t do things for his popularity or to be recognized, he or she does it to help. I guess you can call me a realist (real life scenarios) I’ve never really been in to the comic type heroes like superman and batman but more like Chris Kyle who was an American navy seal sniper who killed countless numbers of enemies and saved an immense about
“She needed a hero, so that is what she became”, is a quote commonly known, but do you ever really think about what it means? It means that when no one was there for that person, they became the hero that they wanted, and helped others around them. Everyone needs a hero, no matter what they say. There are many different situations and scenarios that anyone or anything could use a hero.
Have you ever considered what an everyday hero looks like? A hero can be a policeman, a firefighter, it can even be you and me, or it may even be our mom and dad, and also a hero can be anybody in the world that makes a difference. A hero is when somebody is when somebody needs help a hero helps them in any way necessary, even though the hero might have a few struggles along the way.
Introduction- A hero is a man who puts others before him because he wants to make friends. A hero is confident in himself, sometimes they will be willing their lives for the greater good. They try to stay persistent when it comes to them doing something. How do we know when is someone is a hero? When they face challenges with pure determination, but don’t save or satisfy everyone in the end. It blows us away every time a hero can fix a sticky situation, but it is more important to know what the hero is doing for the protection of everyone else.
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Campbell 1). When we think of heroes most of us think of movie stars or professional athletes, but it’s not always about your popularity or talent it can also be about how you help society. What I think make a great hero is someone who is able to overcome his or her obstacles in life, is highly motivated, and has plenty of bravery.
