Defining a Hero Essay

If you look up the definition of hero what comes up is, "a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.", and then after that is the example, "a war hero", but that is highly debatable. Personally, I don't think there is an actual definition of hero because everyone has a different opinion on what they think a hero is. For example, I consider a hero is someone who is willing to risk their life for you, care about you, and puts you before them, but when asking a friend of mine what the definition of a hero is for them they simply said someone who saves lives. Another idea of a hero was when Gandhi had stood up for his country; India. “Gandhi led nationwide campaigns to ease poverty, expand women's rights, and build religious and ethnic amity” plus he had “spent a number of years in jail in both South Africa and India”. In other words Gandhi never gave up showing everyone how India should be independent. Gandhi had stood out his way by leading marches to declare independence. Gandhi had been admired for his bravery (when he was thrown in jail a few times), his confidence (he never showed any sign of weakness) and perseverance (he had never gave up).

This quote is said in a few words but has a meaning worth a thousand. It leaves the listener of the quote thinking what truly defines a hero from the villain in the world. It gives one the provocation of how they should live their life rather than how they do live their life.

Others think that it takes more or different qualities to be a hero. Among these qualities are bravery, kindness, selflessness, determination, hope, and confidence. Those are just a few among many more traits. Qualities like those are found in many people, from the heroes written about in fiction, to the people who live in towns across the world. By saying this, it’s true that everyday people can be heroes, given the right time and place.

You chose a certain person or category of people to be your hero because you look up to them in a inspiring way. Everyone has their own personal hero. When asked what the definition of a hero is, you will get a myriad of answers. Many will tell you a sports player, a comic book character, or even the name of a person in their life that has made a difference to them, such as a parent or a teacher. This may be true for the person giving you their definition. In reality, there is no ‘real’ definition of a hero, as it is different for each of us.

A hero; in my opinion is selfless, what they do is not for them but to help others. When I think of heroes I’ve always thought of the brave men and women who serve and have served in harms way to protect this country.
