What is family? According to our class notes, "two or more persons joined together by bonds of sharing & emotional closeness who identify themselves as being part of the family," stated by Friedman. Friedman's definition of the family is displayed in the movie, The Notebook. An assessment of the family unit is seen throughout the movie setting and story.

The idea of family is a central theme in Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun. Hansberry alludes to the Old Testament book of Ruth in her play to magnify “the value of having a home and family”(Ardolino 181). The Younger family faces hardships that in the moment seem to tear them apart from one another, but through everything, they stick together. The importance of family is amplified by the choices of Walter and Beneatha because they appear to initiate fatal cracks in the Younger family’s foundation, but Mama is the cement who encourages her family to pull together as one unit. The hardships of the family help develop a sense of unity for the Younger household.

Everywhere around the world, in every different culture, people are grouped into families. The word family can be defined as a group of people bound together over time, because of mutual consent, birth and or adoptions/ placement or simply people who consume responsibilities for one other.

A family can be defined as a person or people who make an effort to make sure that you are doing okay. They prove to you that they will always be an important part of your life, and that you will never be alone when you need someone the most. Family is an important factor in life, these people can help determine what type of person you will be. They help shape you into becoming an amazing person. They do not necessarily have to be blood to be a part of your family. They could just be a major aspect of your life. These people could be complete and total strangers to you at first, but if they demonstrate that they will help improve you life, they should be considered family. These people display many characteristics that will help benefit you in many ways.

For over centuries, the term family has been specifically used to mean a group of people that consist of two parents and their children. The word is originally from the Latin word Familia, which means household or family. Although this word is known all over the world, it can have a different context to each person. In the United States alone, family can be referred to two adults and their children, a single-parent household, extended relatives, and a structure of more than two parents. Despite how the family structure may look like within a household, it plays a major role in life, either directly or indirectly.

What’s the meaning of family? According to Merriam-Webster dictionary family is defined as “all the descendants of common ancestor”, but is that how do you define family? Have you ever had someone in your life outside of your family that you were able to confide in? Share your happiness and saddest moments with? Be your biggest advocate? If the answer is yes, then these people are considered family as well. Channeling personal experiences I’m able to relate to Cecile Gilmer’s believe that “Families are not only blood relatives but sometimes just people who show up and love you when no one else will.”

According to the dictionary family is a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. Or family is from the descendants of a common ancestor. According to society family is a group, it can be related are not. My definition of family is anyone who is there for you through good and bad, someone who always have your back no matter what. Family is not just blood. However some of the best families are the ones you are not related to.

Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process. Personally, I come from a very traditional family. This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on many different forms.

The word “family” is unique, special, and controversial among different cultures and ethnicities.
