“The one permanent emotion of the inferior man is fear - fear of the unknown, the complex, and the inexplicable. What he wants above everything else is safety.” Henry Louis Mencken.
Everyday was like walking on eggshells because of the anticipation and fear of not knowing what was to occur on any given day. There were days when everything was calm and serene and other days filled with chaos and wretchedness. Life was like a roller coaster ride that never ended. My parent’s motto was, “Children are to be seen and not heard”, my brother and I never dared to tell anyone else or express our feelings about the traumatic experiences we were going through in our home. I can’t speak on behalf of my brother but I grew up having low self-esteem and being afraid to speak around many people because I always believed I didn’t have a voice that deserves to be heard. Therefore, up to this day, I’m still working on learning to overcome my fear of speaking in front of others and building the confidence to succeed in life. This has been the most difficult task for me to accomplish because my past experiences have been ingrained in my mind and
During my typical teenage years up until only just a few years ago, I engaged in the usual defense mechanisms of artificial confidence, hiding my insecurities and holding in my emotions both to protect my self-image and eliminate judgments from others. I wasn’t ready to reveal my true self on the basis that people might use that information to hurt or better yet, to destroy me.

Fear. The number one emotion that runs most of our lives. No matter how many times we try to avoid it, it just seems to keep coming back. Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses and she definitely knows what it's like to feel fear. As she has stated many times, some of the toughest roles she's played in films began with the feeling of fear. She would read a script and think to herself, "Wow, I'm scared to take this role. I don't know if I can do this." That thought, however, is exactly what led her to do it and as is turns out, the roles she feared the most turned out to be her best and even earned her many high profile awards, including the ultimate Academy Award.
As a little girl, I was the child who would never let go of my parents. If anyone ever glanced over at me they would catch me either wrapping my whole body around my Mom's legs or begging my Dad to pick me up and hold me. Even worse, if any adults dare took the chance to come over and talk to me I would hide my face, thinking they couldn’t see me so I would never have to talk to anyone. I was shy. Simple as that, talking to people was something I feared the most.
Fear is an emotion that plays a part in our everyday life. Fear is an unpleasant, and dreadful emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or trouble.
Fear is a natural part of human life. That's not necessarily a bad thing, either. As a survival mechanism, fear heightens our awareness and literally prepares our body to throw down or to run away as fast as we can. The fight or flight response triggered by fear is an important physical response in the right setting: say, confronting a panther in the middle of a jungle.
Fear can be “generated by potentially dangerous ideas and examines the way such powerful mass emotions can cloud human judgment [1]”.
Fear has come to permeate the daily life of our generation. We have become very adept at putting on a brave face which is admirable but ill-advised. We refuse to open up or admit our fear, because we don’t want to appear weak to those around us. But every day, all of us go through the same fear. Some days are better than others of course but each and every day we have something that worries us. Something that we may work to hide, and may succeed in hiding from the world and even ourselves for a time. But it is there nonetheless. Each of us deals with stress, pain and fear that is hard for others to understand. We may not even understand it ourselves frankly.
I’ve always thought fear was an intangible thing; an idea that cannot be touched or heard. How strange then, that I feel it in my bones and hear it in the voices and see it in the faces of all those misfortunates who were attendants of the plane crash alongside me. Today is the day I realize fear is much more than an emotion. I believe the actions we take define us; actions taken in fear more so. Fear blinds us, reveals us, immobilizes us, but in some cases, in my case, fear is a catalyst for bravery and selflessness.
Fear is something that large amounts of people have encountered at least once at some point in their lives. It has been said to have caused a variety of outcomes, many of them being largely negative. Therefore, it is a common human response to react to fear by counteracting it with positivity and/or success. The idea people have of what fear is depends on the person. In the article “How Fear Works”, for example, fear is defined as a “chain reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals” (Layton 1). The website “Psychology Today” defines fear another way, calling it “a vital response to physical and emotional danger” ("Fear Paranoia”). There are several other definitions people have on the
Fear is the number one obstacle everyone must overcome at some point in their life. When the word fear is brought up I like to think of past situations that I experienced. There are many different methods used to conquer and learn from our fears such and exposure therapy, having a growth mindset, and thinking positive. For example, when I was younger fear was my worst enemy, School was the main reason that caused my fear. My fear of failure was my biggest obstacle growing up so I used that as a method to learn from my fears.
Fear is a normal and an important human reaction to something dangerous, it keeps one out of danger, because fear is disliked and one tries ones best to avoid the object or situation of fear. It causes physical changes known as fight-or-flight reaction, which causes blood pressure to increase and the heart rate to speed up to pump blood to the large muscles used to run away, to balance this the human body has sweat glands which produce perspiration to cool the body.
According to my dictionary, Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. When the word "fear" comes to my mind, I think of an emotion that's caused by a bad situation. There are many things in this world that put fear in me. My greatest fears are computer viruses, thugs, sick people, and clowns. Each of these fears make me very scared and give me goosebumps.
