Comedy can be defined as any act or narrative that makes a target audience to laugh or feel amused. That is the definition of comedy. However, what I find as comedy may not necessarily be any act or story that makes people laugh. What makes you laugh, may not make me to laugh. I may even derive offense in the joke being relayed as comedy. Therefore, two things are important: the target audience and the message behind the joke.
One can see that culture does have a role to play in comedy. In highly religious societies, there’s limit to what jokes are to be made. Some would interpret certain jokes as “expensive jokes”. Also, whether or not someone or a group of people accept a joke or appreciate the effort behind it depends on exposure and their
How do comedians use comedy in order to display a universal truth? Comedy lightens the mood and allows the listener to think better about the Universal truths. But just what is a so called universal truth? A Universal truth is a truth that cannot be disputed or argued against, but what is the biggest Universal truth? Death... There is nothing more certain that death, Or is there? When people die we have no idea where they go or if they even exist. In fact death is probably the biggest dispute among humans and by this logic, what is life? If we think like this then all throughout our life we are confused since we are confused about death. so the biggest universal truth is not death but in fact it is confusion. Confusion is an emotion we feel
“Rather than placing comedy as a creator of puppet-like illusion (making the living seem mechanical), this approach reconsiders comedy as a revealer of truth (as it deconstructs lies). It is certainly not uncommon to hear “it’s funny because it’s true” when witnessing a standup comedian’s act”. For example, when at the beginning of the movie the two guys confuse the Dude with the millionaire Lebowski and break into his home and then realize that the Dude is not a millionaire because of his bowling ball. The Dude replies by saying” obesely you’re not a golfer” but it was a bowling ball. When one of the guys said that the dude was a loser he replies by saying “but at least I was housebroken”. “One might be able to argue that some of the greatest comic moments are those which are able to make comedy out of this difficult reality (e.g. Borat, This is Spinal Tap, certain types of stand up, etc.); however, as a general comic principle, we can agree that emotional involvement creates an obstacle to our ability to laugh”. When we involve our emotions into something that might be funny to other and not our self might be because we have gone through the experience or someone close to us has. For example, the kidnapping of Bunny can seem like a joke, but somebody that has lived through one and survived it can bring up emotions that remind them of that
Many comedians do not abide by these limitations, but there is always some that try to push the envelope even further to get a reaction. This is for comedians to understand the audience, and maybe even get their image know. Jokes for the most part are harmless and have no real intent to hurt, but if it does offend a large group it can be harmful. There must be consideration of feeling, views and thoughts of the people that Cleese is influencing through the media. With this consideration, it does make it difficult to stay on the politically correct side, and the comedic side. Therefore, it is crossed very normally, not everyone will be made happy all the time. With keeping these things always in mind, it makes it impossible to make one joke much less carrier of jokes. So, the best thing one could do is be offensive, but
Humor, for many, is a cheap laugh and a way to brighten someone's day. But for others, humor goes beyond that. Often times in today's world, humor is used to convey messages about dangerous or impossible to state topics. Society allows humorists to speak about unpalatable topics since the delivery of the message is masked. Humorists take difficult messages and use creative humor to make them more accepted into society.
Comedy is an integral part of our daily lives and routines. It can be as simple as telling a joke to our friends to as complicated as a political cartoon depicting a satirical image of a president committing a crime. However, according to author Alain de Botton, comedy is a conduit that is used to express ideas that society is not generally willing to propound in public. It is clear that the role of humorists is not only to humor an audience, but also to provide a channel for the expression of ideas that are not necessarily ones that we would say to the public, making their role crucial to the functionality of society.
“ Everyone has a sense of humor. If you don’t laugh at jokes you probably laugh at opinions.”. People understand things differently. Its easier to get a point across in a joke and have others listen then laughed at because it sound more like an opinion. Humorists are vital because they expose the taboo subject in society; this illustrated by the following comedic “Doorbell” , “I want a wife”, and “This way up .
What’s wrong with this picture, and why does it seem odd-looking? It’s that feeling when something seems so wrong it's funny. It’s that expression made about the absurdities, an interesting phenomenon is called humor. Though it doesn’t just appear out of the blue, it is the product of the form comedy. Through comedy, humor can be expressed using different techniques such as sarcasm and irony. All in all, the importance it serves in society acts as refuge from life's difficult challenges. Without it, life would become dull.
Anybody that ever wants to be known for being funny has to also be cultured so that they know enough information to make connections or metaphors, and know when a joke
Jokes are jokes for a reason. They aren’t meant to be taken seriously. Comedic films have provided entertainment to the people of the world for years. They are the go-to method form of comic relief and is valued greatly in the world. A great example of this would be the movie, Hot Fuzz. Directed by Edgar Wright and released on March 14, 2007, Hot Fuzz is about a London police officer, Nicholas Angel, who is very good at his job and is “too good” for London, and is reassigned to a quiet town called, “Sandford”. In this town, the police force is completely useless. None of the officers have any of the traditional values that normal police officers have. So when a series of “accidents” happen in the town, Angel believes there is something
The event that I and my partner went to was ComedySportz Improv Comedy present by CSzSacramento. CSzSacramento is located on Arden Way in Sacramento, California. They are open Thursday to Friday at 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Also, on Saturday at 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm. However, the show that I went to was held on Saturday and start at 7 pm to 8:40 pm. The entrance room was small but relaxing. That room have a few couches, a big white board where I can doodle on, and it is where I can purchase admission tickets and foods. The admission ticket cost $10 for students, seniors, and children and $12 for general admission. The foods they have for sale was popcorn, soda, water, and candy. Popcorn and water are each $1.50 and soda is $2.00. The room after the
What one person finds funny another might disturbing. Comedy is art is a forum to express someone’s self. Many comedian’s use their anger and frustration to express their opinion on current events, politics and religion. Many Americans would rather listen to a comedian talk about what’s wrong in America then listening to the local news. Some comedian should refrain from exercising their right to freedom of speech if others are offended.
Humor is not something new to us. In fact, the use of humor is as old as the use of communication itself, and just like language, it has undergone some phenomenal changes thanks to our cultural differences. Many factors such as age, personal experience, geographic location and even level of education play a part in our use of humor. A simple joke one person from one area may find hilarious could get completely different results from someone from somewhere else. Whether or not someone finds a joke amusing is ultimately determined by their interpretation of the joke.
Before receiving a license or a school permit, a person has to take a Drivers Education class. A few months before I turned fifteen I decided that I would get ahead of the game and take the class. As an avid learner I had nothing but excitement for the class. The first day I showed up in good spirits expecting to take a class that I would enjoy. Little did I know that my instructor would loathe my work ethic and abhor my drive to overachieve.
Comedy exists in difference. Therefore, comedy must exist on a plane where there is a standard - something that can be considered normal, the concept of a default. Once you’ve set the standard for what is normal, anything that can be considered abnormal can be a source of comedy. Simple enough. But the question of what is normal has extreme situational, personal, and geographic implications. In talking about comedy and race the implications are simple. There is a clear default in a world oversaturated by Western media – the default being whiteness. Once you have set these as the standard, any character who is a deviation of this standard is set up to be laughed at. How then does one go about making jokes when they’ve already been marked as
Rutgers University did an experiment that found that many different people found different comedies to their liking( Lynch, 2007). While this study found different people had a different sense of humour, demographics shared the same likings. This held true not only in the genders, men and women, but also between the different races watching the stand-up shows. This is because, “ humour is often linked to shared experience.”(Burnham, 2010). For people to find a joke funny they must first understand the background to it. Sometimes this is backed up during an anecdote, but other times it is focused on past knowledge many people might share. This is why people in the same demographic find the same things funny. Jokes understood in the Catholic community may not be found funny by the Mormon society as their beliefs differ slightly. Another strategy is to give the audience a common enemy. Normally this is done by the comedian to make himself an enemy so the audience can laugh at him. The ability to combine as a group gives people the common experience and puts them at ease to laugh. Other than audience the major part of a joke that a comedian must watch for is the offensiveness of their
