Everyone wants to a hero, wants to be loved, want to have a crowd cheering their name, wants to have a chance at a happy ending. Naturally, media gives us the stories where we see the heroes we want to be. However, when only certain people get to be the hero, we naturally form ideas on who hero or heroine. And usually, it is not someone of color, someone in the LGBTIAQ+ community, someone who isn’t skinny or ripped, or someone who is not a man. The amount of heroes who fall into the old mold is staggering in all kinds of media. However, there is one type of media that all kinds of heroes, a character for practically anyone who has not seen a hero like them on any screen. Introducing the wide wonderful world of webcomics.

They can also greatly vary from the standard hero mold. Often times, heroes will make mistakes or gets into trouble based on naivety, being tricked, or just being reckless; yet in webcomics the hero can get into trouble because they try to get revenge against bullies and the plan goes haywire, snap at loved ones when they feel stressed out, or not be honest with a person in fear of ruining their relationship. These are not necessarily flaws, because everyone has either done something similar or has imagined going through one of these scenarios. Negative emotions and actions are a part of being human. Stories and the characters that are the foundation of webcomics will go mix up the classic black and white morality and creates deep and complex shades of grey. For the heroes are not just starry-eyed, young characters looking for adventure in their lives, but people with various backgrounds, ideas, mental and emotional states, just like in the real world. Most of the time whenever you hear the word “hero” you automatically think of a superhero which is okay, but those are not the only hero’s. People do not have to fight battles to be a hero, you can be one by helping someone out, being somebody a person looks up to, or simply someone who made a change for the world.

Another definition is the main male character in a story, play or film. Let’s think about this for a minute. What does the stereotypical hero look like? Chiseled features and some sort of tight costume or uniform. They display qualities such as bravery, immortality, and an undying devotion to the longevity of the human race. Oh, and don’t forget their superhuman powers; speed, strength, mind reading etc. Does a hero always have to demonstrate physical strength? Does he always have to save the human race in a valiant act of pure courage? What truly defines a hero in every sense of the word? I believe acts of perseverance and emotional strength suit this word more accurately. Or, those who save the human race by teaching and encouraging us to save ourselves.
The types of heroes are also a great part of writing hero fiction, as identifying the differences between characters is crucial to avoid both plagiarism, and apathy towards the writer’s work. When you’re a hero, you should be strong with everything. You may struggle, but in the end you are still helping everyone you can. A hero should be able to do something as simple as telling truth.
