Overall, Phoenix Jackson’s character adds to the story through her humble, maternal strength. Phoenix’s love for her grandchild brought her through many challenges, but year after year as she completes her trek, she keeps her grandson as her top priority. This overwhelming level of determination allows her to keep hold of her most valuable possession. Through her actions she reveals to the reader that her humble, caring, determined nature allows her to overcome the odds and provide for her family as well as maintain a simple Southern elegance.

In the end we figure that Phoenix may be on a journey that really does not exist. We find out that maybe the grandson isn’t alive and that he has been dead for weeks. Whether or not Phoenix was aware she did not let life bring her down, whatever she was set to do she did and with great perseverance she has achieved her goal.

She shuts her eyes depending on her instincts to safely cross. Phoenix would be lost if she had not questioned her perception. Her instincts guided her to safety. This phenomenon of surviving by instincts is disclosed in many animals. There instincts rarely lead those animals astray. The phoenix journeys to the city of Heliopolis to cure itself, bursting into flame and reborn from the ashes. Phoenix Jackson makes a journey to the city of Natchez to acquire a cure for her afflicted grandson. The trip appears to revitalize the life of the woman.

Phoenix shows determination by getting by all of these obstacles and getting to town. Her determination to get to town shows that she would not let anything get in the way of something she knows she must do.

Phoenix Jackson is an elderly, African American women who makes her way to town to pick up medicine for her grandson. Along the way, she encounters difficulties that she overcomes in order to reach her destination. Welty uses the south’s view of African Americans to inspire Jackson’s journey. She meets up with a young, white man who is hunting while walking through the woods. He condescends her because of her old age and the color of her skin. He even, at one point, aims his gun at her as a joke. She never falters, and even ends up stealing a nickel from him. Also, when she enters the clinic where she needs to pick up the medicine, the receptionist thinks she is merely lost and unintelligent. She talks to Jackson as if she is less than her until a nurse, who knows Jackson, steps in. These things are southern aspects that can only be so accurately depicted if the writer is a southerner

She faces all types of obstacles like racism, poverty, hard travel, the cold weather and her old age. Phoenix starts by making her way through the wilderness and says, “Out of my way, all you foxes, owls, beetles, jack rabbits, coons and wild animals. . . Keep out from under these feet, little bob-whites” since its winter the animals will probably hibernating and this symbolizes her easy travel. The old lady without hesitation continues her journey up the hill. She says, “Seems like there is chains about my feet, time I get this far.” She uses the chains as a sign of slavery since she is a very old lady she might have been through that rough period of time.

Phoenix, on the other hand, was a selfish manipulative old woman who had an obsession with power. She was on a journey through the woods to the city, where she had many encounters. When Phoenix encounters the hunter she steals the money that falls out of his pockets. She always seems to want something for her troubles. However, later in the story while in the hospital, Phoenix has a totally different personality. She seems to have no guilt for the actions she makes.

Phoenix realizes that she must keep on going so as she keeps going she passes through various of places which are all dead which kind of makes her fell like if it was meant to be there for her. So that helped her keep going she remembers that there is a gum tree near by which water flows from it so as she reaches the gum tree she drinks from it and remembers all the times she would go through there. She continues her journey and is approached by a dog that knocks her over into a ditch she asks fell help but there is no one around until a white hunter shows up and helps her out. He asks her what is an old lady like her doing out there in the woods and as if he feels he is more superiorto her, he points the gun he has at her and she doesn’t say anything. He asks her aren’t u afraid grandma but she say no that she has had that happen to her plenty of times and she won’t be afraid he drops a nickel on the ground but he doesn’t realize it. She had to travel very far to reach the hospital for his medicine. On her way she encountered many elements of wildlife, of which she scared out of her path. Her dress was constantly caught in the brush and was in danger of being ruined as she passed a barbed wire fence. This also took place during Christmas time when it more than likely was extremely cold out side. But Phoenix's desire to help her grandson, and save his life, while also preserving some life of her own, helped her strive in completing this trip.

Phoenix shows strength in the face of adversity when she faces many different struggles on her journey. One example of Phoenix showing strength through a hardship is when she still goes on the path knowing that there are dangers already on the path that she will have to take, but she takes this path so that she can go get medicine for her sick grandson. Phoenix has taken this path many times, and knows that there are things like thrones, and barbed wire that are going to get in the way on her path. Phoenix still takes the path and always finds a way to get out of the struggles that she is put through. Phoenix is a poor women, and she faces many hardships with being poor. Phoenix has to find unique ways to get through life because she faces struggles because she is poor. For example Phoenix uses an umbrella as a cane because she is too poor for a real one, she takes money, and has to be given money, but she does not let these things get her down. Phoenix stays strong because she knows that she can make a way if there is not a
