Beauty is defined as a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form that pleases the aesthetic senses. Especially the sight. Throughout the ages, humans have created their ideals on what makes a person beautiful. There are many different opinions of what makes a person beautiful. The primary contributing factor in conflicting definitions of beauty is culture. Culture affects everything around us from what we eat to what music we listen to, and beauty is no exception. What one culture finds beautiful another might disagree. However, what we all can agree on is the universal desire to be beautiful.

For example, the Kayan women from Burma, Thailand practice neck stretching. This practice evolves placing several brass rings around the neck and increasing the number of rings until the length of the neck has grown. These rings do not stretch the neck but rather push down the shoulders creating the illusion of a longer neck. Girls start participating in this practice as young as the age of two. This practice is seen as strange and even dangerous by outsiders, but to the Kayan women, it is the embodiment of wealth and beauty. Beauty standards are always changing, and trends come and go. When we look at the past, we can see how much the level of beauty has changed. Things that used to be taboo such as tattoos are now very common among people today. When it comes to the future how much can change can we expect when it comes to beauty? Will things like leg stretching become mainstream? How far will humans push the body’s boundaries in the name of beauty? What does the future have in store for us when it comes to beauty? There are no definite answers to these questions but as humans evolve so will their ideas of beauty.
