Definition Essay: What Makes A Hero

“A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really deeply cares.” A quote from actor, Debi Manzar. A hero is not someone who people praise or overtake in a situation. A hero is someone who truly helps another, even if it is just waving and saying hello when they see them. Most of the time, a person truly does not understand how much of a change that they could make in someone’s life by simply smiling.

Ricky Martin once said, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Ghandi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” Almost anyone can be a hero, as long as they have the courage and the maturity to understand and respect those who they attempt to help. Despite the fact that a hero cannot save everyone, being heroic is about placing others before oneself and strive to help those who need it the most.

The definition of a hero. A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Another definition is the main male character in a story, play or film. Let’s think about this for a minute. What does the stereotypical hero look like? Chiseled features and some sort of tight costume or uniform. They display qualities such as bravery, immortality, and an undying devotion to the longevity of the human race. Oh, and don’t forget their superhuman powers; speed, strength, mind reading etc. Does a hero always have to demonstrate physical strength? Does he always have to save the human race in a valiant act of pure courage? What truly defines a hero in every sense of the word? I believe acts of perseverance and emotional strength suit this word more accurately. Or, those who save the human race by teaching and encouraging us to save ourselves.

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” -Anonymous. A hero is someone that acts in the time of need to help others. They can risk their life for other people, their beliefs/rights/religion, and their freedom.

A hero can be anyone. A hero does not have to be a super hero that is on TV or in the movies. A hero can be anyone who is admired for his or her courage and outstanding achievements. A hero can be a parent, a family member, a friend, or even a doctor. A hero is a person who comes into another persons life to help and encourage the other person. The hero can have a significant effect on any person. They could have helped a person when he or she was having a hard time or they saved them from an accident. A hero is a being who is recognized and idolized for his or her traits, achievements, and values. Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives can be a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country. Even a parent can be a hero to his or her child by leading them in the right direction. All teachers are heroes when they make it their job to teach a child anything that will help them in life. You don’t have to go to great lengths by risking your life to make a difference in someone else’s life.

When I think of a hero, I picture someone who is unselfish. This person could be a surgeon that saves lives, or maybe just your best friend telling you not to give up when you feel like you failed. That person makes you feel cared for. A hero is someone who helps others, and is there for you when you need it most.

What makes someone a hero? In today society the criteria of what a hero is or is not maybe confused by what should be constitutes heroism. Some feel that the word hero gets throw around way too much, for example to celebrity, public safety personnel, the average Human, and especially service man and women the ones that have fought for their county. Can all these people hold the title of being a hero? In this short report we will look into how others define what a hero is, my own concept of what a hero means to myself, and how one of Saint Leo’s core values can be considered a very heroic trait.

Joseph Campbell once said “ A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. Being a hero doesn't necessarily mean you are the strongest or the fastest, it can simply mean you put others before yourself. Being heroic can have many different attributes ,but in my eyes a hero reflects characteristics of selflessness, courage and nobleness.

Introduction- A hero is a man who puts others before him because he wants to make friends. A hero is confident in himself, sometimes they will be willing their lives for the greater good. They try to stay persistent when it comes to them doing something.How do we know when is someone is a hero? When they face challenges with pure determination, but don’t save or satisfy everyone in the end. A hero can be anyone. Heroes come in different shapes and sizes and even different species, animals, fictional characters, Princes or Princesses in Disney films. Although many people think a hero is a tall and a muscular person that never fails, a true hero can be anyone that faces challenges and overcomes them. There are a lot of heroes out there, some fictional others not. I say this because a lot of people are good and do good, but they lack something or at least seem too. I don’t know what or why exactly this is. Maybe we need define what a hero really is. I think a hero is someone reliable and trustworthy; always doing the right thing and while prepared for the worst, still recognizes and causes the good. Heroes are typically portrayed as invincible, indestructible and rarely wavering in morals. However, I think that everyone will admit that they do need help, can be hurt, and do waver on what to do. So, therefore, the best answer is that heroes are simple people known to be trustworthy and reliable. Yet, as we are all human that is impossible.

Heroes are just normal everyday people. They step up in the face of fear when it’s necessary, but outside of that, they’re just normal people trying to live their life. Ricky Martin, a singer, once said, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. Anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” (“Hero Quotes”) This quote reminds me of my grandpa, Duane Culbertson. He was a hero because he considered it his duty to help anybody in a difficult situation.
