It is essential for diversity to exist because it offers people to have the ability to take in new experiences and viewpoints. However, the definition of diversity can change from person to person. Many college campuses have varying definitions of diversity, whether it is having students of many different regions, majors, or ethnicities. The University of Colorado’s definition seems to focus on the aspect of community. The University of Colorado Boulder defines diversity as having students from a variety of backgrounds and interests, all adding to the idea that they will come together to form a strong community. However, this definition is not consistent with the actions of the university, which focus mainly on race.

It gives way to the idea that the University is very inclusive and cares for all students and hopes to build a strong community. However, there is additional data that sets the university’s definition as slightly different.
Although the University of Colorado Boulder defines diversity as having students from a variety of backgrounds and interests, their definition seems to be focused primarily on race. This can be seen especially in the 2015-2016 Diversity Report. This report attempts to highlight diversity among the university, but the information in the graphs primarily focuses on race, from undergraduate enrollment by race or graduate degrees awarded by race. Most focus on minorities, completely leaving white students out of the graphs. This demonstrates how the university does not want to depict the large difference in the graphs in comparison. In addition, the graphs attempt to describe minorities as adding diversity to the university. They do this by adding the graphs that show a positive aspect of the university such as graduation and retention rate among ethnicities.
