It is essential for diversity to exist because it offers people to have the ability to take in new experiences and viewpoints. However, the definition of diversity can change from person to person. Many college campuses have varying definitions of diversity, whether it is having students of many different regions, majors, or ethnicities. The University of Colorado’s definition seems to focus on the aspect of community. The University of Colorado Boulder defines diversity as having students from a variety of backgrounds and interests, all adding to the idea that they will come together to form a strong community. However, this definition is not consistent with the actions of the university, which focus mainly on race.

Although the University of Colorado Boulder defines diversity as having students from a variety of backgrounds and interests, their definition seems to be focused primarily on race. This can be seen especially in the 2015-2016 Diversity Report. This report attempts to highlight diversity among the university, but the information in the graphs primarily focuses on race, from undergraduate enrollment by race or graduate degrees awarded by race. Most focus on minorities, completely leaving white students out of the graphs. This demonstrates how the university does not want to depict the large difference in the graphs in comparison. In addition, the graphs attempt to describe minorities as adding diversity to the university. They do this by adding the graphs that show a positive aspect of the university such as graduation and retention rate among ethnicities. Even if the colleges are achieving their goals to get a diverse student body to the campuses, they fail to get those groups to interact. In the article “The Lie About College Diversity,” Bruni’s interpretation on diversity explains that common college diversity programs are categorizing students together with similar backgrounds. Only a number of programs accept students to interact with fellow diversity students with different cultures, backgrounds or ethnic groups. These programs do not motivate students to reach out and share their thoughts with other groups because they could get rejected. A conversation needs to be had regarding the effects of diversity. Diversity in practical terms is the inclusion of people from different walks of life whether it be color, race, or heritage. This topic is one that is sensitive for many people because of the history attached to this subject. In the past decade there has been instances where the supreme court has had to address the topic of “Diversity” to justify this ongoing debate. Diversity, what does it look like at Jackson State University (JSU), a historically black university, located in Jackson, MS? Administrators in higher education are charged with the responsibility of preparing students to be civil minded in a society that is changing rapidly as it relates to the inclusion of others. With such intensity to incorporate increased changes and differences, there is a need to collectively understand the full scope of differences among students.
Diversity is more than a racial term. While we are at a school that has a high concentration of nursing and engineering majors, we also live in a city that thrives on the arts. This encourages both mindsets to coexist together in a symbiotic relationship, both benefiting each other. Diversity also plays into a cultural aspect. Diversity is an ongoing discussion in day-to-day life. Not many situations occur without diversity having a role. Racial diversity is something that is often discussed on college campuses.
