Thomas Jefferson was not the typical hero. He was shy, reticent, and hypocritical on several occasions. Nevertheless, he accomplished countless remarkable achievements, including drafting the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and becoming president of the United States, to preserve his ideals of liberty and democracy. He was also generous to others, which can be seen in his hospitality to the strangers that came to his house frequently. His efforts laid the foundation of democracy in America, and due to this, he could be regarded as one of the greatest heroes in U.S. history. Although Thomas Jefferson is considered a hero by many, the precise definition of a hero varies from source to source. A hero is a person who goes to great lengths in order to protect certain moral values, and uses their power for the good of others. However, this is not how dictionaries typically define a hero. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a hero is “a person admired for achievements and noble qualities” (“Hero”). Although the former definition is similar to this definition, there are a few key differences. One of distinctions between the definitions is that the dictionary definition includes that the person has accomplished achievements, while the former definition does not include this. The reason for this dissimilarity is that not all heroes have accomplished great deeds. Some heroes accomplish many small acts. Another difference is that the

He has written books and articles on a number of subjects in early American History. To begin with, the author cites specific achievements that Thomas Jefferson made, starting with the contributions he did when he was part of the Continental Congress. “As a member of the Continental Congress, he proclaimed in the imperishable prose of the Declaration of Independence the values of liberty, equality, and natural rights that always have been at the heart of the American experiment in self-government” (Sheridan 64). “A hero does for others. He would do anything for people he loves, because he knows it would make their lives better”(191). This quote reflects on what a hero is in the book A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. The main character Grant becomes a hero through the eyes of others, after meeting with another main character Jefferson, who was wrongly accused for a crime because the color of his skin was black. Jefferson got the punishment of being put to death by the electric chair. Grant goes to visit Jefferson in jail because Miss Emma wants Jefferson to be a man and walk to the electric chair. Grant could be considered a hero in this text because he helped Jefferson become a better person, Jefferson transformed into a man with the help of Grant for the love of his family, and Grant also teaches kids without enjoying his job though he is good at teaching.

No doubt, many highly regarded things that happened in the United States occurred because of Jefferson. First, he helped write the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which is one of the most impactful things he did. The Declaration laid down a foundation of ideals and goals for our nation. This helped us win our freedom from King George III, and provided a good example for other countries who were also struggling with independence. This was an important change to the United States because it allowed colonists to feel entitled to something. Even now, it has had a lasting effect on us. Next, in 1777, Jefferson wrote a document, The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. In it, he had written that he supported practice of any religion, claiming that freedom of religion is a ‘natural right’. This later

The American Revolution, perhaps the most momentous war-related milestone in American history, would not have been possible without the strenuous efforts of the courageous men we call Patriots or otherwise known as the Founding Fathers of America, who gave their all in the fight for freedom against the British. Many names of great men come to mind when we think “founding fathers,” such as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, or Samuel Adams. Yet there is still one great patriot and founding father who seems to stand out above the rest, and that man is Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson is widely known as being the author of the Declaration of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase that bought more than 20% of the U.S. However, what most
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Thomas Jefferson is arguably one of the most influential people to Virginia and the United States before and during the American Revolution. Jefferson had been a governor for Virginia during the American Revolution, he had wrote the Declaration of Independence along with four other notable American politicians, and served as a minister to France in 1785-1789. Without Jefferson the American Revolution most likely would have played out completely different and we could possibly be living a different life today.
