Definition of Key Terms Nuclear Power The use of nuclear processes (decay, fusion and fission) to generate energy in the form of useful heat and electricity. Fission reactions are currently further developed than other methods of producing nuclear energy; however it is believed that once nuclear fusion reactors are successfully developed to the extent to which they can function and produce substantial energy, they can be the leading form of energy production as they are substantially safer, more convenient and more efficient. Pinch devices were among the earliest in the development of fusion energy, particularly in the United Kingdom, along with the stellarator in the United States of America. Tokamak (or Tokomak) The tokamak is a magnetic confinement device, which, in brief, uses Z-pinch technology to contain plasma electromagnetically in the shape of a torus. It is used to create thermo-nuclear fusion reactions. It was originally developed in Russia using Pinch technology. The results were so good that members of the Zero-Energy Toroidal (or Thermonuclear) Assembly had to go to Russia to review it to quell scepticism. Stellarator The stellarator, similar to the tokamak, is a device used to confine hot plasma with magnetic fields in order to create and sustain a controlled nuclear fusion reaction. Being one of the first controlled fusion devices, it was created in 1950 and built the year after in what became the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. They fell from favour in the 1970s due to the development of tokamaks, but following problems with the tokamak, the stellarator was re-launched into popularity.
