John Barth, and acclaimed writer said, “Everyone is necessarily the hero of his own life story” (Hero/Heroism). To me that means everyone is a hero in one way or another. Volunteering is an example of being a hero. You could be helping disabled people by volunteering at Camp Courageous. Deloras Propst volunteers at the Camp Courageous Garage Sale here in Manchester Iowa. The garage sale raised $115,000 last year for the camp (Propst). This is one reason I count Deloras Propst as a hero. Deloras has been a volunteer at the Camp Courageous Garage Sale for a very long time; 19 years to be exact. She started volunteering in 1996 when her friend invited her to help out at the garage sale. She started out sorting things in the store and now she is the head of the board for the garage sale. In “Manchester Garage Sale”, Camp Courageous says, “The Manchester Garage Sale, Camp Courageous’ largest fundraiser, is run by over 50 volunteers.” Deloras is in charge of those 50 people. Deloras affects those people by helping them learn about what it means to be a volunteer. They get to see the improvement of the camp as they raise money for it. Another reason is she enjoys volunteering. She loves to interact with her volunteers, many of them are very good friends of hers. She knows she can count on them from year to year. She also like to volunteer because it gives her a sense of purpose. If it wasn’t for the Garage Sale she would probably be in a nursing home. Without volunteers like Deloras and those that help her the camp for the handicapped would not be like it is today. A community that sees what its volunteers do can be an inspiration to others to give their time and talents to help others (Why Is Volunteering

For the first two and last two days of my trip, I will be living with a host family in Delmas 83. They will charge me $20 (U.S.) a night, for a total of $80 (U.S.) by the end of my trip. Luckily, the orphanage that I will be volunteering at will be housing the volunteers in a local guesthouse in Croix des Bouquets, which is only a few blocks from our actual job site.
On a sunny day at the merciless boxing gym his sweat coming flowing down his face, the sound of the punches hitting the mitts, and the ring of the bell to end the round. Edgar Delgadillo is the head coach at the gym preparing his fighters for Golden Gloves that occurs once a year, he recalls his past experiences when his fighters winning at the event last year.
Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is not the urge to surpass others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Someone who stays strong in their heart and shows selflessness towards others even though he or she could be in the risk of personal risk and danger is what makes a true hero. Anyone could be recognized and admired as a hero if they could, but there's a big gap in front of that because it adds on with the hero showing compassion in spite of the obstacles that they are faced with. It could make someone more heroic than he or she ever was by just showing selflessness to others. Clara Barton put herself in danger to treat the wounded during the Civil War and not only that, but she founded what is known today the American Red Cross (History.com). Harriet Tubman helped many slaves to freedom in the north, also placing herself in peril. (History.com). Florence Nightingale, who was a nursing innovator did the similar as Clara Barton, but during the Crimean War (History.com & Biography.com). All of these women stressed the idea of helping others before they did so for themselves, but that took bravery to do so. Whether the challenges that a hero has to endure, a true hero puts others before themselves no matter what the position he or she is set in.
Ricky Martin once said, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Ghandi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” Almost anyone can be a hero, as long as they have the courage and the maturity to understand and respect those who they attempt to help. Despite the fact that a hero cannot save everyone, being heroic is about placing others before oneself and strive to help those who need it the most.

I am a hybrid. African American and Latina. I am a mix of my grandmothers. Deloris is an African American woman who raised her children with southern pride in North Carolina. She happily spoiled them with fried chicken gizzards, hush puppies, collard greens and tough love. Elizabeth is a Venezuelan woman who fell in love with a Puerto Rican musician named Eusebio. She spoiled all of her children with love, arepas, tostones, arroz con leche and teddy bears. I have never met Deloris, but I have seen pictures. She lives through the many sayings that she preached to my mother, and ultimately what my mother preaches to me. Elizabeth adored oversized earrings, rings, and stuffed animals. On the day of her death I was left Goldie, Blue and a
The world of transportation is constantly evolving. Innovators all over the world are trying to find to create new forms of transportation that is fast and efficient. One innovator, Elon Musk, has created the Hyperloop; a new idea for transportation of passengers and cargo. The Hyperloop travels the country within tubes allowing passengers and cargo to enter and exit at specific locations throughout the country. It travels faster than the speed of an airplane at the price of a bus ticket. The one-million dollar donation provided by the Board of Education should fund the creation of a Hyperloop station in Delphos.
My favorite constellation is Delphinus. I really didn't know much about different constellations so I did some research and found this one. Dolphins have always been one of my favorite animals so I instantly liked it. Delphinus is the latin word for Dolphin, and Delphinus is in the northern sky close to the celestial equator. Delphinus was one of forty eight constellations founded by Ptolemy in the 2nd century. Delphinus is a rather small constellation, ranking 69th biggest out of 88. It is also bordered by Vulpecula, Sagitta, Aquila, Aquarius, Equuleus, and Pegasus.
Anyone who influences anyone else by saving or helping save his or her lives can be a hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the lives of millions of people by bringing justice to minorities. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest heroes, led a nonviolent revolution to free his country. Even a parent can be a hero to his or her child by leading them in the right direction. All teachers are heroes when they make it their job to teach a child anything that will help them in life. You don’t have to go to great lengths by risking your life to make a difference in someone else’s life.
"All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming" said Helen Keller, a woman who faced many obstacles in her life ("Fun"). Most people don't dedicate their lives to help others, especially if they have disabilities themselves, but Helen Keller is a different story. At 19 months old, Helen Keller was diagnosed with a disease that led her to be deaf and blind. A true hero is someone who is dedicated to help others in need no matter the circumstances/struggle he or she faces, never gives up, and is an inspiration for others. Helen Keller is a hero because she overcame the struggle of being deaf and blind by never giving up, dedicated her life to help others, and made change in the world despite her disabilities.
Heroes have many goals and many challenges, but whether they are successful or not is a whole different story. Always trying their best to achieve their certain goal and risking to help others is what heroes live for. For example, during the attacks of 9/11, boat drivers such as were rescuing people from the island of Manhattan in New York. There were thousands upon thousands of people, but with enough support, the boat drivers were able to rescue everybody. Vincent Ardolino, one of the boat drivers during the 9/11 boatlift, said in the documentary “Boatlift” that he tells his children to “never go through life saying you should have. If you want to do something, do it.” This mindset is what all heroes should adopt for the future. These people may not have the most difficult job in the world, but they carry out small challenges with a lot of passion. Likewise, were the heroes during Hurricane Harvey and Irma, two very devastating Hurricanes that have costed the USA many lives. Many people from outside of the area have done countless things to help like rescue people with their boats, donate money, and help rebuild. Many of these heroes have risked their lives and struggled on for the greater good.
Introduction (Attention): One hundred percent: an all encompassing, nonexclusive percentage. It is also the very percentage of the people in this classroom who have done some type of volunteer work in their lives. Furthermore, it represents the percentage of individuals here today who found the volunteer work they did beneficial. Many of you additionally stated that volunteering made you mentally feel good about yourselves because you were able to reach out and help others.
