Throughout the song, Skyscraper by Demi Lovato, there are various metaphors used to further get her message across. One of the first metaphors found is in the line, “I will be rising from the ground.” This line does not literally mean she will be standing up from the ground, but it symbolizes that she is overcoming her struggles and her past experiences, letting herself grow. Another metaphor used, which is in the form of personification, is in the line “Skies are crying.” Skies do not have to ability to physically cry like humans do, but the artist is trying to compare the sky to something that cries and the raindrops to teardrops. Repetition is seen in all songs in the music industry due to the fact that, the chorus is repeated at least three times in each song. However, the chorus is not the only thing that is being repeated in the lyrics of the above song. Repetition is seen when Lovato is repeating, “Like a skyscraper”. By repeating this line throughout the song, emphasis is put on the idea that Lovato is powering through her struggles and that she is now stronger. A second form of repetition in this song is seen in the excerpt, “Go run, run, run… go, run, run, run…” Lovato is using the repetition in these lines to express how many people in her life have distant themselves away from her because of what she has been through. As soon as she opens up to people, they find a way to leave or ‘run’ away. The main purpose that repetition is used for in many songs and poetry is to emphasize the idea something or someone is trying to portray. Emphasis is created because the word or phrase that is associated with that idea is constantly repeated making it prominent in the listener or reader’s mind. It also aids with the formation of rhythm in both poetry and music, which is important to create a unique piece of artwork through mood and tone.
